主語と動詞
(1)What do you think are four of the most important inventions in history? という文は (2)What do you think four of the most important inventions in history are ? では間違いなのでしょうか？ (3)what do you think this is? の語順と同様に考えると、正しい文のような気がします。 文法的に、 (2)の文だと What(C) (do you think) four of the most important inventions in history(S) are(V) ? 歴史上最も重要な４つの発明は何ですか？ (3)の文だと What(C) (do you think) this(S) is(V) ? となり、合っていると思うのですが・・ よろしくお願い致します。

これは、補足の欄に書かれているとおりでwhatを主語と捕らえるか補語と捕らえるかの違いで 両方とも正しい文です。通常はwhatが主語で書かれている文が多いというだけです。 このような間接疑問文の並べかえ問題は、英語の指導にあまりなれていない場合に (2)の答えを想定しないで作成してしまうことがあります。しかしこの問題がそれに 当てはまるかどうかはわかりません。 突き詰めていえば、 Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan. The highest mountain in Japan is Mt. Fuji. と二つの文を比べてみた場合、うえの文が圧倒的に多いが 下のように書くことは間違いではないということです。 あるいは「間違い」とする根拠がないということです。 要求されている答えは(1)であり、元の文が(1)であることも間違いないと思いますが 別解として(2)は許容範囲になると思われます。 通常は作成する側としてはこのような別解をさけるために be動詞に関する疑問文の並べかえ問題は、間接疑問文も含めて 補語には名詞以外をおいて、 Who was killed by Jack? Who do you think was killed by Jack? などという問題を作成しています。 質問の文章などから、おそらく高校生の方ではなくて既に大学は卒業されているような方が 高校生あるいは受験生を指導中に生じた問題で質問されているのはないかと思い解答させていただきました。

No.3 No.4です。 間接疑問文なら(2)も正解だと思いますよ。文中からwhat～が続いますよね？

こんにちは。 前に同じような質問があったと思いますが、間接疑問文だと思います。 例えば、What is this ? と Do you know を一つの文にした場合 Do you know what this is ? となりますよね。 しかしながら、What is this ?とDo you think ?を一つにした場合は What do you think this is ? となります。 これがあなたの書いている （３）what do you think this is? ですね。 この文は正しいと思います。 あなたは、これと同じ考え方ができないかということですよね。 私は、できるというより、むしろそのほうが正しいと思います。 つまり（２）が正しいと思います。

私も（２）は正しいのではないかと考えています。 しかし（１）も正しいと考えています。 Whatを主語と取るか補語と取るかの違いなのですが、 (1)What do you think are four of the most important inventions in history? の場合、 What（S) do you think (挿入） are (Ｖ） four of the most important inventions in history (Ｃ) ? 何が（Ｓ）歴史上で最も重要な４つの発明（Ｃ） (2)What do you think four of the most important inventions in history are ? の場合、 What（Ｃ） do you think（挿入) four of the most important inventions in history (S) are(V) ? 歴史上で最も重要な４つの発明(S)は何(C) となり、どちらとでも解釈できると思うのですが。 ちなみに、(1)のような語順の文章は参考書等で２回見たことがあるので、文法的に正しいのだろうなぁと思っています。

No.3です。 (2)の＜of＞を付けたらいいと言いましたが、その場合は文末のareは付けないでください。でも少し意味が変わってくるかもしれないので(2)の回答は無視してください。

皆様ありがとうございます。しかしながら、 (3)what do you think this is? という文は文法的に正しいはずです。 そして(3)が正しいという前提で、 (2)What do you think four of the most important inventions in history are ? は(3)と同じ文法構造をしていると考え、 (3)の文章も文法的に問題ないのではなかろうかと考えているのです。 ですから、(3)の文が(2)の文と同じ構造であると認識してはいけない、もしくは同じ構造を取れない理由がありましたら教えていただきたいのですが。 たびたび申しわけありません。

私もそのような英文は受験生のとき少し悩んでいだと思います。 (1)が正解だと思います。 do you thinkは（）でくくって、「どう思いますか？」と言った感じで＜挿入＞されていると考えればいいと思いますよ。 (2)はWhat do you think of～ というふうに＜of＞をつけたら正解になるのではないですか？ (3)はWhat do you think is this?になると思いますが、こういう言い方ってなんだか不自然な気がするので、単に、What is this?というのではないかと思います。

「これは何？」を英語にすると「What is this?」になりますよね？ 「do you think」はただの挿入であって，whatとisの間に入っているだけです． だから，What do you think is this? となります．
(1)は I think A,B,C,D are four of the most ～. が元になっており (2)の場合は I think four of the most ～ are A,B,C,D. が元になっていて、どっちも正しいのでは？

お願いします。 Who do you think is the author of this novel? How old do you think he is? これらは、do you thinkが挿入された疑問詞疑問文であると思いますが、 What do you think I am? 私を何だと思っているの？ Who do you think you are? 何様のつもり？ この文中でのdo you thinkは、文全体を強調しているようにとれます。 ということは前の2文中のdo you thinkも、 ”強調”としてとることも場合によっては可能である、 と考えてもいいんでしょうか？

(2)who do you think is the best player on our team? 参考書によると(2)の英文はwhoがdo you thinkに続く節の主語なので(2)のような語順になり、(1)はそうでないので(2)のような語順にはならないと書いてあります。 しかし僕にはこれの意味が全く分かりません。 (1)What do you think is his job ? 間接疑問文について質問があります． あるwebページに， 「疑問詞＋主語＋述語」を間接疑問文といい，文中で一つの節を作ります，とありました． また，そのwebページには， What do you think were the ten main news items of this year? という文章は間違いで，正確な文法で考えると What do you think the ten main news items of this year were? です． と書かれていました．これを読んだときに，納得できました．「疑問詞＋主語＋述語」の語順になっているので，確かに上の文章は間違いで下の文章が正しいことが理解できました． しかし，この説明に対してある人が，そのwebページの管理者に， What do you think is the next best way? という文章がジーニアス英和辞典に記載されていましたが、この文も本当は間違いで， What do you think the best way is? が正しいのですか？ と質問したところ， これはWhat が主語と解釈できますので，元の文章が間違っているのではありません． と管理者が回答されていました．私はこの説明がよく理解できなかったです． What do you think is the next best way?の文でWhat が主語と解釈できるのならば， What do you think were the ten main news items of this year?の文でもWhatが主語と解釈できるのではないでしょうか？ ご回答よろしくお願いいたします．

疑問文を作る際に、疑問詞を文頭へ置いた場合、 助動詞の使い方がよく理解できておりません。 例えば、 What did you eat last night ? という文では、"what"が"eat"の目的語になっているのは 解ります。 しかし、 What do you think he ate last night ? が What do you think does he eat last night ? とならない理由が解りません。 "do you think"が、文中に挿入されると、 "does"を使うことはできないのでしょうか？ "do you think"と、軽めの表現なので 省略できるかと思っているのですが、 What do you think he ate last night ? という文では、"do you think"の箇所を削除すると What he ate last night ? と文法的に成り立たないのが疑問です。 "do you think"という表現を省略しても 文として成り立つためには、 What do you think does he eat last night ? でなくてはならないのだと思うのですが…。 言語なので、「そのようなものだ」と言われてしまえば それまでなのかもしれませんが、文法的に説明がつくので あれば、お知恵を拝借願えませんでしょうか？

Nowadays I use my personal computer for three hours everyday. I can discuss about much things with friends by using it. Discussion on the Internet makes excited. This is why I think of the class of information very important. (3) I think no subject is less important than math. I like math. I enjoy to take my math class. I don't like any other subjects, because they are not interesting for me. My teacher also talks math is important too. I think math is very useful in my future.
