1. Knox が1983年に警察に捕まって拘留された途端に、殺人が止まり、釈放された途端に女が殺された。計算の上（math) ではKnoxを犯人にしたくなる誘惑（tempting)は理解できる。 英文で言いたいのはこう言うこと。それを日本語に訳すときにどうするかと言う話で、つじつまが合うは悪い訳ではない。ちょっとニュアンスが違うけど。 状況からしておれを犯人と思いたくなるのはわかる。 2. we might as well be civilized about it. (その事についてまだ話をするんだったら）、落ち着いて（節度を持って）話した方が良いんじゃないかと思う。 as well したほうが良い。 be civilizedは礼儀正しくなる、ですがおそらく刑事のがKnox を犯人と決めつけるような剣幕だったんでしょう。それで落ち着いて礼節を持ってと言う意味合いで、こう言ったんでしょう。 両方ともイディオム的なものでは無いので、訳さずに英語のまま理解するようにした方が意味が通じます。
