they held us up という状況がつかめません
以下はアメリカ人が車で国境を越えた時の事らしいです。 Getting stopped by customs and border patrol didn't help either. They held us up until early morning hours. And we ended up sleeping during the day. 「They held us up until early morning hours.」ですが 「手を上げろ」はhold upですよね、 最初読んだ時に何時間も手を上げていたのかと思いました。 ずっと手を上げていたらとても辛いと思います。 それとも単に、拘束した（足止め食らわせた）という意味でしょうか？ 質問に不足がありましたら補足したいと思いますので 宜しくお願いいたします。

「足止めを食らわされた」という後者の意味だと思います。 ｈｏｌｄは、つかむにしろ、抱えるにしろ、基本的には「保持する」という意味だと思うんですね。 で、ｈｏｌｄ ｕｐは、何かをしばらくの間抱え込んでしまうことだと思います。 ここでは次の意味でしょう。 「 《しばしば受身》〈人・事を〉妨げる，遅らせる；〈交通などを〉一時止める；…を中止する，棚上げにする.」 （Ｙａｈｏｏ辞書より） ぜんたいとしては、 「税関や国境パトロールで、足止めされるのにも消耗させられた。 彼らは、われわれを夜が明ける時間まで、開放してくれず、ために、われわれは、お日様が昇ってから眠る羽目になった。」というようなかんじではないでしょうか‥

「足止めをくらった」「引き止めた」くらいでいいと思います。 holdはいろんな意味をもつ単語なので、訳すときに悩みます。 乾杯のときグラスをかかげるときにも使いますし、 元気？といった時にもholdは使います。 プラスの顔とマイナスの顔両方持っている不思議な単語です。 イメージとしてはheld＝そのまま、up＝たったまま という連想で覚えたらいかがでしょう？ ちょっと無理やりですが、、、＾＾

hold upを手をあげろと訳してしまうと誤訳してしまいます。 日本語で言うなら「動くな！！」の方が正しい訳でしょう。 銃を突きつけられて、「Hold Up!!」と言われたら、無抵抗の意志を示すために無意識に手をあげてしまうでしょう？あそこから来た意訳です。 この場合のHold Upは本来の意味である、動かないで止まる、つまり拘束したということです。 もっとわかりやすい説明は参考ＵＲＬで。

ご回答とためになるサイトのご紹介をありがとうございます。 on とか off などの感覚を絵で描いてある本がありましたが、 あの本のことでしょうか？ 私も日本人なので Hold up! は「手を上げろ」だと思っていました。 でもきっと Freeze! ということなんですね。 8月16日13:40
