その say は、下記の辞書の定義にあるように 　suppose, assume の意味ですから、If ... という文だと思って読めばいいでしょう。 　「彼女があなたの住んでいる地域の住民になれば、南部的な巻き舌の発音を控えて、北部の英語らしい発音を心がけるようになるかもしれません」
