英作文で、過去or 大過去の選択で迷ってます。

「彼は禁煙すると約束したが、禁煙できなかった。」を英訳してみました。 どちらがいいでしょうか？その理由も教えて下さい。 1)He had promised to stop smoking, but he failed to do so. 2)He promised to stop smoking, but he failed to do so.

#2さんがわかりやすい例を挙げてるのでこれ以上は回答らしきことは申しませんが 「彼は禁煙すると約束したが、禁煙できなかった。」という日本語だけでは時間の長さがわからないんです 「約束した」と「禁煙できなかった」との間の時間 約束したのは1年前かもしれないし、1時間前かもしれない 吸ってしまったのは、半年前かもしれないし、たった今かもしれない つまり、「ずっと前に約束して(守って)たんだけど、"ついに"その約束を破ってしまった」だったらhad promisedの方がいいと思いますし 「約束なんかしたけど、守れなかった」なんて軽い感じで、単に事実を伝えるだけなら、promisedだけでいいような気がします お伝えしたかったのは、どちらがいいか云々の話しではなくて、どういうことを伝えたいか(文脈)が大事なので、その内容によっては適切な表現方法は異なるということです

こういう過去完了は大過去というより、現在完了を過去にスライドしたもので、 過去までの完了を表します。 逆に今にスライドして、直接話法的には "I have promised to stop smoking." 禁煙すると約束したぞ。 この現在完了の気持ちが過去にずれて had promised そして、had hoped とか、had wanted のような希望を表す動詞の過去完了は 未達成を示唆します。 だから、ここでも未達成を示唆しますので過去完了があっているのですが、 but ～と言っていることを考えると、わざわざ示唆しなくてもいいとも言えます。 とにかく、過去完了を大過去的にとらえるのでなく、 過去までの完了・継続・経験の用法でとらえると、 これは過去では表すことは不可能です。 過去より古い過去の１点。 こういう過去の１点は、現在完了としては相いれませんが、 過去完了では使える。 この大過去と、過去完了本来の完了・経験・継続は区別しないといけません。 話者が完了の意味で過去完了を使うのなら、それは過去形では決して置き換えられません。

＃１さんが回答されたように、等位接続詞で経時的に述べる場合に、前方の文を過去完了にする必要はありません。 従属接続詞の場合は時間のフレームは主文にありますから、従属節が主文より過去の事なら過去完了になります。ただし口語だと厳密に守られてはいないと思います。

He had promised to stop smoking the day before yesterday, but he failed to do so yesterday. 2)He promised to stop smoking, but he failed to do so. He promised to stop smoking yesterday, but he failed to do so earlier today. why "today here? and i use failed," like its 2000 now, you are talking about something that happened in the morning. had done something means it happened before "did" and the effect has been remained. have done something means it happened before "do" and the effect has been remained. if you need any further info, please feel free to contact. amks7237@hotmail.com have a good day. おやすみなさい。

2)He promised to stop smoking, but he failed to do so. 2がいいですね。 He promised→he failedと、時間順になっていますから、（それに等位接続詞ですし）、過去完了形を入れる必要はまったくありません。 He wanted to see pandas at Ueno Zoo but he could not. こういうのは時間の流れのままですね。 He visited Kathy but she had not been back there yet. このように時系列が崩れると過去完了形の出番ですね。 以上はあくまでも等位接続詞の場合です。 以上、ご参考になればと思います。
