大学入試ということは，しっかりと高校英語を学ばれているという前提でお答えします。 この it is ～ that は強調構文です。 that 以下から訳して，「...なのは～だ」と訳すので， まるで，that 以下が真の主語である形式主語構文かのようですが， 別のものです。 THIS CONCEPT gave ～. という文がもともとあって， THIS CONCEPT という主語を強調するときに，it is ～ that でくるんで， 残ったものをそのまま続けたのが， It is THIS CONCEPT that gave ～. です。 後ろから「～なのは」と訳すのが昔からの模範訳ですが， 予備校の模試レベルの採点基準ではそのような訳でなくても この概念こそが，～与えたのだ。 と this concept が gave の主語である点が明確ならば減点しません。 後ろから「～なのは」とするのは流れに逆らうことになります。 まあ，形式主語構文なら後ろから訳すことになり， 本来，日本語と英語は流れが違って当然なのですが。 この概念こそが，市民権運動に，その倫理的力強さを与えたのである。 後の that は（こういう言い方は個人的には好みませんが，学校・予備校でよくなされる） 完全な文が来ていますので，接続詞の that で concept と同格節を導きます。 最初に this concept とあって，「この概念」が前に出ているわけでなく， この that 以下という概念，ということです。 すなわち，議論の目標と同様に，説得の方法もまた重要であるという概念こそがである。 A as well as B は「B と同様に A も」であり， 主語になる場合，A に合わせる，というのが学校文法です。 この means は単複同形ですので，複数形の可能性もありますが，おそらく単数形でしょう。 結局，A も B もなので，まとめて複数扱いにする，というのは実際の英語ではあり得ます。 文法問題でやるとまずいですが。

Laziness means reading the books one ought not to be reading, and becoming so absorbed in them that at the end of the day you still have most of the reading to do that you had before you that morning.
