この文でいう「that is」の文法解釈

Airbus.corp was more of a consortium initially, but it's become integrated now and so it's one company. But it's a very, very global company. There are something like 84 nationalities working that is, people from 84 nationalities who are in the company as employees. >There are something like 84 nationalities working that is, people from 84 nationalities ここで”that is”がくる感覚が意味的にも文法的にもわかりません。 どなたか教えていただけないでしょうか。。 よろしくお願いいたします。

もともとラテン語で id est という表現があって， 英語でも i.e. として用いられます。 id est をそのまま英語にすると that is になるわけですが， 英語としては私の知識では文法的には説明できません。 that は「それ」なのか「関係代名詞」なのか。 英語としては that is to say という表現が使われ， that is も使われます。 まだ that is to say であれば 英語としては文法的説明ができるのかもしれませんが， 私としては慣用句的に挿入，くらいにしかわかりません。 とにかく，ここでは that is で「すなわち」という言い換えであり， 正確には , that is, とコンマで区切ります。 後のコンマを抜かす人が多く， 前のコンマはあまり抜かしません。 コンマがあるので英語的には関係代名詞ではないのでしょう。

正確には , that is, とします。 that is to say の略で「すなわち」の意味です。 something like 84 nationalities working およそ84の働く国民（国民が働いている） すなわち people from 84 nationalities who are in the company as employees 従業員としてその会社にいる84の国出身の人々
