Efficiency and Environmental Impact of Battery-Powered Vehicles

  • Battery-powered vehicles are becoming increasingly popular for short trips around town.
  • These vehicles have an impressive efficiency rate of around 85% in converting electrical energy into kinetic energy.
  • However, it's important to consider the environmental impact of electricity production, as even the most efficient methods, like hydroelectric plants, are only 80% efficient.

Battery-powered vehicles are popular in some countries for short slow trips around town. Their efficiency is high at around 85% conversion of electrical energy into kinetic energy. But remember, the electricity must be produced in the first place, and even the most efficient electricity production (by hydroelectric plants) is only 80% efficient.

Although wind power is safe and non-polluting, there are some problems associated with land-based and offshore wind farms in Japan. There is a shortage of suitable land on which to install large numbers of wind turbines. Also, some residents who live near wind turbines complain about the noise. For offshore wind farms, fishing rights and legal regulations present complications. Nonetheless, the feasibility of developing wind farms in Japan is being studied. Wind is one of the most viable resources that can be used to generate electricity without producing greenhouse gases. Wind power to generate electricity is efficient and clean. So, don't be surprised if you see more wind turbines turning in the wind in Japan.

AMSTERDAM, Just a few years ago, politicians and green groups in the Netherlands were thrilled by the country's early and rapid adoption of “sustainable energy,” achieved in part by coaxing electrical plants to use biofuel — in particular, palm oil from Southeast Asia. Spurred by government subsidies, energy companies became so enthusiastic that they designed generators that ran exclusively on the oil, which in theory would be cleaner than fossil fuels like coal because it is derived from plants. But last year, when scientists studied practices at palm plantations in Indonesia and Malaysia, this green fairy tale began to look more like an environmental nightmare. Rising demand for palm oil in Europe brought about the clearing of huge tracts of Southeast Asian rainforest and the overuse of chemical fertilizer there. Worse still, space for the expanding palm plantations was often created by draining and burning peatland, which sent huge amounts of carbon emissions into the atmosphere.

Photon Absorption Photovoltaic cells are designed to capture the photons of the solar spectrum. Energies in the visible range are especially important to consider, but energy is available in the near-infrared, as well. Solar cell designs that more efficiently absorb these photons must consider the specific energies of these wavelengths. Photons with energies equal to or greater than the bandgap are absorbed as their energy promotes electrons into the conduction band. If photons have energy exceeding the semiconductor’s bandgap, the excess is usually dissipated as heat and is thus wasted. Alternatively, photons whose energies are less than the bandgap are not absorbed at all, but are transmitted through the material and their energy is not used. If the photon’s energy is equal to the bandgap, the energy transfer, in terms of its photovoltaic usefulness, is as close to 100% efficient as is thermodynamically possible.

We could further increase the value and efficiency of a Unified National Grid by helping our struggling auto companies switch to the manufacture of plug-in electric cars and save those auto jobs and renew our companies. An electric vehicle fleet would sharply reduce the cost of driving a car, reduce pollution, and increace the flexibility of our electricity grid. アル・ゴアの“Moving First Is in Our Own National Interest”の一部です。

For example, one popular biofuel is called bioethanol, which is produced from grain. Bioethanol can be used to power cars with specially adapted engines. Biofuels can be produced from a host of different agricultural products. Their development has been brought about by a combination of new advances in technology and government backing. Brazil has been a pioneer in this field. It makes the biofuel ethanol from sugar cane. Partly motivated by the oil crisis of the 1970s and by a desire to reduce its dependence on oil, Brazil invested heavily in biofuels and incentivized their use, particularly in motor cars. In 2005, more flexi-fuel vehicles (cars that can run on ethanol, gasoline or a mixture of the two) were sold in Brazil than purely gas driven ones.

In fact from the start men had dreamed of employing electricity to supply power, but the time wasn't yet ripe-the practical generator and motor didn't yet exist. As we know today,an electric motor is usually operated by current received from a generator-yet in electrical history the motor came first.

Here are two examples of the ESCO strategy: This is a city hall. The ESCO has made changes in the lighting system of the building, which includes over 1,200 lights. It has also introduced a new power system, and put in various sensors. These changes succeeded in reducing energy consumption by 20 percent. This example shows a hospital. Since hospitals use a lot of water and heat, the water system was improved and a new heat system was installed. The lighting system was also made more efficient. The hospital now uses about 25 percent less energy.
