高校３年生です。最近、英文法の問題集を始めました。『基礎英文法問題精講』というやつです。 英語は得意なつもりなのですが、解説を読んでもわからないところがいくつか…じゃなくって、いくつもあります。３つです。教えてください。 (1)関係詞。 Give it to whoever wants it. という文です。 これが"whomever"ではなく"whoever"だというのはわかるのですが、 これを２つの文に分けるとどのような文になりますか? Give it to anyone. ？？？ん？ The man who I thought he was my friend deceived me.この文なら =The man deceived me. I thought he was my friend.ですよね。 これはわかります。 (2)動詞の問題。 Much that I have read has been nonsense. 「私が読んできた多くのものはたわごとだった。」ですよね。 これはなぜ、"have been"じゃなくて"has been"なんでしょうか。 "多くのもの"なのに。 (3)受動態に書き換える問題。 It seems that her family hated him. この文の受動態は、 He seems to have been hated by her family. と解答にあるのですが、これではこの文全体としての動詞は"seems"なので、これは受動態になってないですよね? うーん、納得いかない!!というか混乱してます。 どなたかお願いします!!

どうも最近、こういう回答が多いので気になって質問してみました。 日本語的な意味の理解から無理やり英語をこじつける。 明らかに誤植の英語をニュースの英語だからと言ってそれで無理やり構造をでっちあげる。 質問者の転記ミスの英語なのに、無理やり構造をこじつける。 最近のこの英文。 He was condemned by seven officers, whom it is impossible to suspect of a blunder without insulating the whole army. 回答にこういうのがありました。 （訳文）彼は7人の将校に非難されたが、全体の軍隊を隔離せずに大失敗した廉で彼を疑うことは不可能である。 まず次のような重文があったとしましょう。 He was condemned by seven officers, but it is impossible for them to suspect him of a blunder without insulating the whole army. でお尋ねの文はこの２つの文に分かれている重文を、「seven officersを先行詞として、非制限用法の関係代名詞whom（＝カンマを介して先行詞を説明する）を用いて１つの文につないだ」 わけですね。「重文はやや稚拙に見える」からではないか、と推測できます。 質問文を再提示します。重文にあったfor themは消えますが、カッコ内のhimはあってもなくてもいいでしょう。 He was condemned by seven officers, whom it is impossible to suspect (him) of a blunder without insulating the whole army. ... 以上 なんとなく、日本語的にはこれで意味が通りますが、関係代名詞 whom の先行詞が seven officers と考えると、明らかにこじつけです。 この whom の出所はもちろん、suspect の後です。 suspect him ではなく、suspect them (＝ the seven officers）です。 あと、impossible と without の二重否定により、意味が感じにくくなっていますが、 直訳せずに、 彼は７人の将校たちに非難された。 そして、その将校たちの方に不手際があったと嫌疑をかければ 必ず、全軍を孤立させることとなる。 （全軍を孤立させることなく、彼らに失敗の嫌疑をかけることは不可能である） ちょっと意味が感じにくくはなりますが、英語の構造的には suspect の目的語は彼の方でなく、将校たちの方です。
