英語 butの意味
USのエンジニアにアプリケーションのインストールを頼んだところ以下の回答がきました。 This install can be done anytime but before Monday 30th April, 11 pm EST. これは次のどちらを示しているのでしょうか？ (1)4/30以前ならいつでも (2)4/30以前を除くいつでも（4/30以降ならいつでも） (1)と思ったのでそれをもとに返事をしたのですが、レスが無いため、もしかして(2)なのかと迷っています。 できれば簡単に見分け方も含めて教えてください。 よろしくお願いします。

言い忘れていました。 簡単な話、butをexceptに置き換える This install can be done anytime except before Monday 30th April, 11 pm EST. もしくは This install can be done anytime except for before Monday 30th April, 11 pm EST. が正しい文章になりますか？ ならば This install can be done anytime just/only before Monday 30th April, 11 pm EST. 如何ですか？

ありがとうございます。 まだ腹に落ちていないせいか、この文章をみても迷ってしまいそうですが、 ひとつ前のご説明とセットで勉強してみます。
only, just, but、merelyは副詞ですのでなくてもかまわない無ければbefore ~と言っているだけです。 だから30日のアメリカ東部標準時間で午後11時までに終わりますよ。 が大筋でニュアンスを出せば 30日のジャスト23時前の未明に終えますよ、と言っているだけです。 ”午後11時”までに終える。何日のですかと聞けば答えは30日 アメリカ東部標準時間の午後11時までに終わっていなければならない。日にちは30日。 30日の午後11時30分に仕事が終わったとしたら約束違反になります。 、 彼のポイントはｘｘ日の遅くても”何時”までに終えますよと貴方に知らせたかった。勿論、日にちも重要であるが・・・ビジネスであれば仕事は何月何日の何時までに終える・・と答えますよね。それにjust(but)が加わればジャスト１１時前にと１１時に掛かるだけで、３０日には掛からない。当然４月にも掛からない。

ありがとうございます。 上記メールを受け取っていた別のUSの人に聞く機会がありましたが、 butはなくていい。すなわち4/30の11時以前のanytimeとのことでした。 なぜと聞いても一生懸命ビジネス上の背景を説明してくれるだけで、 どうも文法的に迷っていること自体ピンと来てない感じでした。 でも、他の回答者の皆様が書いていただいた通り、その後社内の海外在住していた人に聞いても but はexceptでしょうと言われました。 もしよければ、どうしてこのように解釈できるのか今後の為にも教えていただけないでしょうか？ よろしくお願いします。

ありがとうございます。 今調べてみたのですが、副詞は前置詞も修飾するんですね。 butを副詞のjustととって、just beforeと読み替えると、 4/30午後11時前にという訳になる →ということは(1)の訳ということでしょうか？

この英文、ほんと悩ましいですね。 もし4月30日以降なら普通はThis install can be done anytime after Monday, 30th April, 11 pm EST. とすると思うんですが。。。 もしanytime but と解釈して、「4月30日アメリカ東部時間の午後11時以降」なら、そんな夜遅い時間からインストールを開始できるというのはエンジニアの世界では普通なんでしょうか？ 私は最初これを読んだ時、This install can be done anytime but (needs to be done) before Monday, 30th April, 11 pm EST. と書かれていないものを補って解釈してしまいました。 （つまり（１）の解釈） 指定されている時間まであと10時間あまりですが、エンジニアの方から確認のメールが早く来るといいですね。
補足
私も全く同じ解釈をしていました。 他の方へのコメントにも書きましたが、どうして(2)の訳にならなければいけないのかが よくわからないのです。(1)が不可な理由がわかるといいんですが… ちなみにサーバーに対する作業なので夜から開始は普通なのです（いやなんですが） ※結局まだ返事は来ていません（汗）＝(2)なんでしょう

(2)4/30以前を除くいつでも（4/30以降ならいつでも） が正しいです。 (1) には but 「…以外」「…を除いて」の意味が入っていません。

ありがとうございます。 No3様にも書いたのですが、 (1)はbutを「だけど」と訳しているつもりなのです でもやはり皆さんは迷わず(2)とわかるということは やはり何かあるんでしょうね。

(1)だと but を無視していますので，(2) です。 anything but ～で「～では決してない」という熟語がありますが， これは「～を除く何でも」という文字通りの意味から来ています。 before には 4/30 は含まれませんので， 4/30（を含めて）以降ならいつでも before がある分，ややこしいですが，基本的には but ～で「～を除いて」ということです。

butもbeforeも前置詞のため、文法の観点からは正しくないように思われます。 butには「～以外」という意味があるため、(2)が正しいと推測されます。 butがbefore ... ESTまで係っていると考えれば、「4月30日以前を除くいつでも」（つまり4月30日以降）と解釈できます。
補足
butが前置詞の場合except forと訳せるのは辞書でわかっていたのですが、 おっしゃる通り、このbutが前置詞なのか判断できないのです。 普通に「だけど」と訳すと(1)の回答になっちゃうのです。 逆に、「だけど4/30以前なら」と書きたい場合に自分ならこの英文にしてしまいそうでこわいです。 何が問題なのかお分かりになりますでしょうか？
