和訳
次の英文の和訳です the rest of the world is only a few hours away ある英文の一部ですが、みたところ文脈は関係しないと思います。因みに、史上初めて南極に辿り着いたというスコット氏、アマンセン氏らの南極探検隊について記述したものの序文です。 この場合、restとthe worldをどう捉えるか、が大切かと思うのですが、特にthe worldだと思います。しかし、自然に訳せません。 アドバイスいただけると助かります。

こんにちは。英文の和訳で、どうしても分からない所があるので教えてもらえるとありがたいです。 John（仮名）came near to killing him, という文です。「もう少しで殺すところだった」という意味ですよね。これは、「殺したいほど憎かった（けど何もしなかった）」ということだと思っていたんですが、その後に「and only escaped legal penalties at heavy cost」とあるのです。 なので、「（殴ったり蹴ったりして）殺す一歩手前までいった」ということか？！と思いついたのですが、このような意味になることってあるのでしょうか？ 前後の文脈からも分からないので困っています。よろしくお願いいたします。

My husband’s parents live in the same state a few hours away, and we usually only see each other on holidays. They are generally nice people and fun to be around, yet they are completely uninterested in our life and being a part of it.
