イギリス在住の者です。 ビンなどを２つに割ってしまったような場合、 I broke the bottle into two pieces. で大丈夫ですよ。 ケーキを６つ切りにするときなども、 I cut the cake into six pieces. と言います。

英語の in half とか into halves は、本当に均等に２つに分ける場合などに用いられる表現なので、ポットやジャーを割ってしまう場合の表現としては適切ではないと思います。そういったものの場合は、「粉々になる」 という表現の方が適しているような気がします。たとえば to smash to pieces のような言い方が出来るかもしれませんが、そもそも smash には 「粉々になる」 というニュアンスが含まれています。従って、私の考えでは、「リンゴを真っ二つにする」 ような場合には、適当な動詞ではないと思います。たとえば split an apple into halves などといった言い方ならできますけれども・・・
