He deeply desires, a true friend, someone whom he can express his feelings and thoughts to. People and relationships are important to him despite his independent exterior. He is interested in the lives and affairs of those close to him. He is an excellent arbitrator, negotiator and peace maker and meddler in other peoples problems. But not soft B, he is as forceful as he feels is necessary for achieving his own aims and ambitions, and if he feels others are not appreciative of what he is trying to do, then he will consider them unworthy of his time and efforts and he will take back what ever efforts he has made on their behalf, or whatever he has given then, When he gives to people it is not free, even if it just advice, it comes on loan. And at some point the loan is recalled. The favour owed is collected like a debt by him.

All through history, and all over the world,it seems that women have been willing to suffer pain, and even risk an early death,in order to make themselves appear more beautiful. For many centuries women in both East and West applied thick masks of white paint to their faces.Though most often lead-based ,this paint was also sometimes made from mercury. It had the effect of slowly poisoning the women who put it on their faces everyday. The minerals passed into the body, where they damaged the internal organs, caused tooth decay and bad breath, and most ironically of all, destroyed the skin,it gray and scarring it with deep marks.Women with this skin condition would in turn apply even thicker layers of white paint to their faces. In Europe in the eighteenth century, when white faces were the height of fashion among the rich, many young women died as a result of their makeup. What is surprising about this practice is yhat it began in accident times and continued for some 2000 years. In Babylon and Assyria lead face-paint was in common use as a beautifying cosmetic. The ancient Greek doctor,Galen, was already warning several centuries before Christ that some makeup was poisonous, and doctors continued to do so far centuries afterwards―without any success.Goverments tried to ban it,but women continued to use it and continued to die.In Japan and China the same practice lasted,as it did in the West, untill the early part of the twentieth century. In America, for example,lead-based face products were still on sale in the shops in 1911.This means that there are women alive now whose mother used lead on the skins. Despite the damage to their health, why have women so universally sought to attain a certain standard of‘beauty’?When one realizes that things such as this have gone on for thousands of years,it becomes hard to brame fashion magazines or television.Perhaps it has something to do with the setting of impossible ideals, the desire to possess the parfect beauty of the gods. And Perhaps some women―and some men,at certain times in history, and in certain cultures―have always been willing to die in exchange for a brief moment of apparently immortal beauty.

Psychoanalysis is both a new understanding of how the human mind works and a new way of treating illnesses of the mind. One of the important ideas of psychoanalysis is that we do not know most of our thoughts and feelings and cannot control them. Sigmund Freud compared the human mind to a block of ice floating in the ocean. Just a small part of the ice shows above the surface of the water, while most of the ice is beneath the surface.Freud said that the mind was somewhat like the ice. We know only a small part of our thoughts and feelings. He called this part of the mind the conscious. The large part of our thoughts and feelings that we do not know and cannot control he called the unconscious.

Keys' semistarved volunteers felt their hunger in response to a homeostatic system designed to maintain normal body weight and an adequate nutrient supply. But what precisely triggers hunger? Is it the pangs of an empty stomach? That is how it feels. And so it seemed after A. L. Washburn, working with Walter Cannon (Cannon & Washburn, 1912), intentionally swallowed a balloon. When inflated in his stomach, the balloon transmitted his stomach contractions to a recording device (FIGURE 35.1). While his stomach was being monitored, Washburn pressed a key each time he felt hungry. The discovery: Washburn was indeed having stomach contractions whenever he felt hungry .

Moreover-taking the word "tragedy" in its most ordinary modern sense-it is Gretchen who suffers the tragedy, which Faust takes in his stride. We never see him hunted by the furies, like Orestes: no sooner has Part Two begun than spirits "remove the burning arrows of remorse, and cleanse his mind of memories." And though he dies blind like Oedipus, (1)【he does not blind himself with clasps plucked in a passion from the corpse of his beloved, resolved to live in infamy and night.】 Rather, he loses his sight when he is a hundred years old, just before he dies in a moment of elation. Faust's sufferings are incidental. He is not a tragic hero like Orestes, who is called upon to kill his mother, or like Oedipus, who owes it to his city to find out who killed his predecessor and who thus discovers that he killed his father and is wedded to his mother. In Faust, tragedy engulfs not the hero but representatives of unheroic, non-outstanding, suffering humanity: Gretchen, Philemon and Baucis, Gretchen's mother. The death of Philemon and Baucis in the fifth act of Part Two involves no tragic conflict in Faust's mind: he has given different instructions; their death is a hideous surprise to him; but again he takes it in his stride.(2)【 It is another episode, no more.】(3)【 In retrospect we realize, if it was not clear to us all along, that Gretchen's tragedy, too, was a mere episode.】 The drama is epic, the effect cumulative. (1)【he does not blind himself with clasps plucked in a passion from the corpse of his beloved, resolved to live in infamy and night.】 (2)【 It is another episode, no more.】 (3)【 In retrospect we realize, if it was not clear to us all along, that Gretchen's tragedy, too, was a mere episode.】 Gretchen's tragedy, too, was a mere episodeだと思うのですが、Gretchen's tragedyの前にthatがついているのがわかりません。 *また、it was not clear to us all alongのitは何をさしているのでしょうか?

From the beginning,Jean-Paul Gaultier has enjoyed a reptation as the enfant terrible of fashion. It is a subversive and yet strangely innocent image that he has always been keen to live up to. Of all the top designers,he is the most marginal, but also the best at incarnating the aesthetics, attitudes, desires and ambiguities of a whole generation of young people, not only in France but on an international level. The high level of recognition that Gaultier has achieved in London and New York is reinforced by the success of his perfume.

Even as he realized that he was constitutionally incapable of writing anything "truly tragic"-and (1)【actually felt compelled to tone down the end of the Urfaust】-he laughed at those who "come and ask me what idea I sought to embody in my Faust. As if I myself knew that and could express it! From heaven through the world to hell,' one might say in a pinch; (2)【but that is no idea but the course of the action. 】 And further, that the devil loses his wager and that a human being who, out of profound aberrations, continues to strive always for the better, is to be saved-(3)【that】 is indeed an effective thought which explains a few things and is good, but it is not an idea that is the foundation of the whole and of every scene in particular. 『Goethe's Faust by Walter Kaufmann』 (1)【actually felt compelled to tone down the end of the Urfaust】 実際にUrfaust(初期のFaust?)の終わりを和らげることを強いられるのを感じた? tone downは和らげる、という意味でしょうか? compelledは強いられる? (2)【but that is no idea but the course of the action. 】 しかしそれは行動のコース(成り行き?)以外の考えではありません? (訳は合っていますか?) つまりどういうことを言いたいのでしょうか? (3)【that】について このthatはthat the devil loses his wager and that a human being who, out of profound aberrations, continues to strive always for the better, is to be savedを指しているのでしょうか? (更に悪魔が賭けを失うことと甚大な精神錯乱を脱して常によい方向に努力し続ける人間は救われること――それは実に少しのものを説明する効果的な考えであり、良いです。しかしそれは全体の、そして特にすべての場面の基盤である考えではありません?)訳はこんな感じですか? 内容がいまひとつ入って来ない感じですが、 よろしくお願いいたします。
