- The structure of 'is well known to its discredit' in the sentence below the reference book is not understood. Although there is a phrase 'be known to' which means 'to be known by', it seems to have nothing to do with it.
- Notoriously, happiness is the reward given to those who seek something other than happiness itself. It can be understood as an ironic expression.

>be known to で、~に知られていると言う熟語 ではありません。 「to its discredit」で「不名誉になる話だが」というような意味になります。 「as is well known 」＝「よく知られているように」 「notoriously」＝「こう言うと悪い意味で有名になってしまうが」 以上、参考になれば幸いです。

説明し忘れましたが，人間の場合は to one's surprise のよう感情を表す名詞がきて 「結果としてそのような感情になる」となりますが， 今回のようにものが主語の場合，感情というより， よい方向であれ，悪い方向であれ，結果としてそのような状況に陥る という感じです。

so that 構文について質問させていただきます。 普通 I was so tired that I could not do that. というように使うかと思います。 しかし次の東大の問題の文章中のbut以下を見ていただけますか。 In the example I am thinking of the person who continues to behave in what most people would agree is a normal manner, but one so remort from his old self that he appears, to those who know him, to be someone else entirely. ここで私が引っ掛かるのは、but one so remort・・・ ではなくbut one is so remort・・・とすべきなのではということなのです。なぜbe動詞が不要なのでしょうか。 簡単にヒントでもかまいませんので教えていただけますでしょうか。
