But in some quarters it is taken for granted that within a generation, human beings-including you, if you can hang on for another 30 years or so-will have an alternative to death: being a ghost in a machine.

出典は、Best American Essays2010の "The murder of Leo Tolstoy" の文です。 “Tolstoy died in November 1910 at the provincial train station of Astapovo, under what can only described as strange circumstances,” I typed. “ But the strangeness of these circumstances was immediately assimilated into the broad context of Tolstoy’s life and work. After all , had anyone really expected the author of The death of Ivan Ilyich to drop dead quietly, in some dark corner? And so a death was taken for granded that in fact merited closer examination.”

You are modest, discreet in love, reserved and drawn to handsome enigmatic men. Usualy ones with status. You set your sights very high but you are devoted, faithful, reliable. In the past you may have had to make many sacrifices for love. You can be anxious, nervy, tense you set yourself high standards and worry silently, rather than speak out when you are unhappy in a relationship. Interested in the man you love, you worry about his welfare. You are supportive and take care of everything so well, that your help, while appreciated is still often taken for granted. In love if the man is less than perfect, if he has bad health or bad habits you always think you can redeem him, salvage, him, save him from himself and restore things in his life to happiness. The yearning for a decadent prestigious, wealthy life together, or a better life together is often mingled with yearning for a partner.

The researchers believe their results can be applied to evolution as a whole. it seems that , in human evolution , it was very important that the majority of people be right-handed. This is because most of the time cooperation was more important to our survival than competition. However in certain situations , competition was more important. In these cases , having about 10 percent of the population left-handed was an advantage for human beings.

The concept of mathematics is as old as human beings. Even some animals have a primitive sense of numbers. It is certainly difficult to believe that the pyramids of Egypt, for instance, could have been built without substantial ability in geometry.

It is only in the present dimension of time-that which lies between past and future, between what has already happened what is yet to comethat freedom and the priority of the political for the human world fully emerge in Arendt's thought. For her the political is by no means the be-all and end-all of human experience. It is distinct from “what we can do and create in the singular: in isolation like the artist,in solitude like the philosopher,in the inherently worldless relationship between human beings as it exists in love and sometimes in friendship.

In the future there will be no more human beings. This is not something we should worry about. Much of today's scientific research may enable us eventually to repair the terrible vulnerability to watch our present state of evolution has exposed us. It is widely thought inevitable that we will have to face the end of humanity as we know it. We will either have died out altogether, killed off by self-created global warming or disease, or, we may hope, we will have been replaced by our successors. The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill would allow for inter-species embryos that will not only enable medical science to overcome the acute shortage of human eggs for research, but would provide models for the understanding of many disease processes, an essential precursor to the development of effective therapies. Darwinian evolution has taken millions of years to create human beings; the next phase of evolution, a phase I call “enhancement evolution”, could occur before the end of the century. The result may be the emergence of a new species that will initally live alongside us and eventually may entirely replace humankind.

A sociologist named P. Townsend of England made an important discovery about poverty in a prosperous society. To summarize Townsend's argument in a very simple way: "There are people who can't do what everyone takes for granted, and that percentage rises rapidly below a certain income level." Will be. For example, let's say that there is a shared perception that having a bath at home is a matter of course for Japanese people. However, in rooms where households with incomes below a certain level live, the bathroom installation rate drops rapidly. Then, people with less than this income are "poor" in the sense that they are not enjoying what is taken for granted in society. Townsend called this relative deprivation (Relative Deprivation) and positioned it as an important feature of poverty in modern society.
