Though the interface provided to an end user is mostly analog voice, the bulk of the long-haul network carries digitized voice samples. Moreover, the network is controlled by a set of special purpose computer interconnected by an Internet-like computer network. Thus, we classify the telephone network as a digital computer network. Chapter2 is an introduction to the telephone network.

The Internet philosophy is to put intelligence at the endpoints, and to assume that the network may drop, mangle, and reorder data. It is up to the endpoints to maintain communication despite these impairments. Moreover, the network is not expected to maintain any information(or state) about the performance requirements of an endpoint.

10 hundred thousands equal one million. We write the number one million in degits as 1000000. A group of three digits is called a period, the next three digits are the thousands' period, and the next three digits are the millions' period. Each period is separated by a comma. In each period, the pattern of ones, tens, and hundreds repeats itself. Beginning at the right, the valeus of the places are: ones, tens, hundreds; thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands; millions, ten millions, hundred millions. Each place has a value 10 times greater than the place to its right. This system of writing number is called the decimal sys-tem. [Demical] means having to do with ten. In the decimal system, the place values are based on group of 10. You've already been learning how this works, but let's review the basic ideas. In the demical system, whenever we have 10 of a certain place value, we write it as 1 in the next highest place value.

Even the changes in the environment ,in answer to which adaptation may be thought to have occurred ,can to large extent be read in the geological and paleontological record left in the sediments of ages past.

And if you have tried mowing a meadow you will know how much the art consists in working within your powers, easily and rhythmically. The temptation to lay on with all your might is overpowering, and you stab the ground and miss your stroke and exhaust yourself in sheer futility. And then you watch John Ruddle at the job and see the whole secret of the art reveal itself. He will mow for three hours on end with never a pause except to sharpen the blade with the whetstone he carries in his hip pocket. What a feeling of reserve there is in the beautiful leisureliness of his action. You could go to sleep watching him, and you feel that he could go to sleep to his own rhythm, as the mother falls asleep to her own ownswaying and crooning. There is the experience of a lifetime in that masterful technique, but the point is that the secret of the technique is its restrant, its economy of effort, its patience with the task, its avoidance of flurry and hurry, and of the waste and exhaustion of overemphasis. At the bottom, all that John Ruddle has learned is not to try to bowl three balls at once. He is always masster of his job.

Almost single-handedly, Freud created a new framework for the clinical understanding of dreams, which became an important activity in the new therapy of psychoanalysis. Dreams were called "the royal road to the unconscious." In the classic Freudian view, the dream is a method for maintaining sleep in spite of unacceptable impulses-usually sexual oraggressive-that arise when the censorship of the conscious mind is relaxed during sleep.the unacceptable impulse which might disturb the sleeper is transformed into a more acceptable and dramatic form by the dream work, using such mechanisms as displacement and condensation. Displacement , for example, is unconsciously moving the repressed sexual wish for the mother to the doream image of a more acceptable substitute woman, thereby hiding the incestuous nature of the wish. In the mechanism of condensation, several discrete figures are condensed into one composite figure that stands for all of them. Secondary elaboration, such as disguising actual persons and events, is used to put the resulting images into more acceptable form before they are experienced as a dream. The dream in the Freudian view allows a partial discharge of the original impulse, without allowing it to appear in such a primitive form as awaken the dreamer. In Freudian dream interpretation, the free-association of ideas to the motifs of the dream is supposed to lead back to the original and undisguised latent dream behind the experienced and remembered manifest dream.
