Some observers have even gone so far as to argue that scince as a discipline has finished its work. (have gone so far as のところ。 Distant objects are examined without any contact. 5. "Beam me up, Scotty" (訳をお願いします。 6. Kimble stopped well short of suggesting they could teleport a human being, but he imagined that someone might try with a bacterium. (stopped well short...のあたり、意味はなんとなくわか るのですが、文法的な説明できますか?) 7. physicists measured the thickness of a human hair using laser light that was never actually shone on the hair, but only might have been. 2. Cervole then pursued Sir Oliver to the fortress of La Roque, where a terrible battle followed. Whereを言い換えると,and at the fortress of La Roqueというところでしょうか。 3. Some observers have even gone so far as to argue that scince as a discipline has finished its work. (have gone so far as のところ。 というか,「もはやdiscipline(学問?)としてのscience(自然科学?) 4. Distant objects are examined without any contact. 6. Kimble stopped well short of suggesting they could teleport a human being, but he imagined that someone might try with a bacterium. (stopped well short... But it stopped short / Never to go againはこちらの意味ですね。

1. These quantum curiosities have received little attention from the public, but they will. 「have received little attention」で「今まではほとんど~なかったけれども」、「but they will (receive attention).」

Marine animals known as box jellyfish have eyes with well-formed lenses capable of producing sharp images that reveal fine detail. But the box jellyfish's retinas are too far forward to receive a clear image, so these jellyfish can receive only a blurry image that reveals prominent features of objects but not fine detail. This example shows that eyes are adapted only to an animal's needs rather that to some abstract sense of how a good eye would be designed.

The Tasaday are significant because they are food gatherers, as were all human beings before the agricultural revolution ― in other words, for over 80 percent of human history. If, during all those tens of thousands of years, people everywhere were as peaceful as the Tasaday, then we cannot accept the common belief that Homo sapiens are innately aggressive. In fact, they had everything to lose because bloody wars might very well have destroyed the human race at a time when so few were scattered about the globe.

As you wandered through the city, you would have seen one building that stood out from all the othes, the so-called Great Hall. Not only was it bigger than all of the other buildings, but it was also built of wood on a brick foundation.(Because the local trees were small, the builders probably bought the wood in the highlands, then floated it down the river to the city during the monroon.) Archaeologists don't know what the building was used for.At first, they guessedthat it was used to store grain, but there's no evidence of that.Today, they believe that Harappa's Great Hall,as well as a similar large building in Mohenjo Daro, was probably a government or public meeting place. Although the great cities of the Indus were very similar, they were not identical. If you were a pilgrim from Harappa arriving in Mohenjo Daro for a religious festival, you might have felt that the people in Mohenjo Daro were a little bit more formal than your friend at home. For one thing,Mohenjo Daro didn't have just a Great Hall, but many other large buildings as well. Each section of the city had several large complexes. Some of these buildings may have been religious buildings or mansions for wealthy merchants. One building had a circle of bricks in its courtyard, which might have been the site of a sacred tree.A double staircase led to an upper courtyard surrounded by several rooms. When archaeologists excavated it,they found that the house was littered with lots of seals and fragments of a stone sculpture depicting a seated man wearing a cloak over his left shoulder who might have been a political or religious leader of some kind.

At the moment big structural shifts, such as the growth of China and India, are influencing prices less than one might think. The two Asian giants are demanding more food (and more types of food), but so far their own farmers have largely satisfied that, so they have not needed to trade much (though that would change dramatically if China were to import wheat this year).
