Gです。 お礼を読まさせてもらいました。 ＞いわゆる「受験英語」において、「英語文法に沿わない英文」はまったく評価の対象になりません。 いわゆる日本の学校英語と言われる、日本での英語文法に沿わない表現は全く評価されませんね。 これは分かっています。 大変残念な事だと思っています。 日本での学校英語文法のすべてが悪いとは思っていません。 ＞それが、いくらきれいで、わかりやすい言い回しでもです。したがって、これが文法的に理にかなっているか、ということが一番の重要なポイントなのです。 きれいと言う事は私も文法の一部とは考えられません。 作られた文法と言うものには間違っている部分があると言う事は30年ごろ前から認識されてきていますね。 例えば、thatの文（また私の「好き」の文も）ですが全く文法に何回以上使ってはいけないとはされていませんね。 つまり、ご質問の回答としては「いくら用いても文法に触れる事はない」と言う事でしょう。 それを試験が要求するのであればおかしいと思わない英語圏の英語教育者はいないと思います。 使いすぎて読みづらくするな、とは言うでしょうが。 また、それを私は言いました。 また、「A book that it needs mental effort to read.という表現は正しいでしょうか？」と言うご質問には文法から見れば全く問題のない表現と言えると思いますし言葉としての表現も悪くないと思います。ただitをとってくださいね。 ＞itは必要ですよ。to read をさす仮主語であり、そのあと続くbookをthatが関係代名詞として受けています。 これははっきり言って文法的に間違った解釈です。 itがあれば通じません。 a book that to read needs mental effortsと言う事にはなりませんね。 mental efforts to readが一つになっているのです。読むための精神的努力、と言う事ですね。 また、日本語文ではこの読むと言うフィーリングはないですね。 と言う事は、a book that needs mental efforts (to enjoy/understand/comprehend/talk about it laterなど）と言う違う動詞も使えるわけです。 文法とは関係ないですね。 あくまでも伝えたいフィーリングを表現する動詞です。 お気を悪くさせてしまったみたいで申し訳なく思っています。 しかし、学校英語の文法だけにこだわらなく言葉として一生使える英語にいつか興味を持ってくれることを願ってもいます。 ではこの辺で自己主張を終了はやめます。

昔ある本で読んだのですが、The forecast says that it's going to rain. において、thatが省略されずにちゃんと使われる場合は、天気の話がすでに話題に出ている場合であって、thatが省略される場合は天気の話が新しい情報として示される場合であるとありました。 又、最近読んだ本では、many people think that Shakespeare was not a real person. という文において、thatの指し示す用法に注目し、このthatは丁寧に聞き手の関心を引こうとする表現であって、省略された場合はそうした気持ちがないのだと書いてありました。 一体、どちらの説明が正しいのでしょうか。それとも、両者共に正しいのでしょうか。 thatの基本の用法は、相手の見える範囲にあるものを指し示すことによって新情報として示すことにあるはずです。ただし、新情報でなくても、話者が強めて言いたいとときはいつでもthatが使えるはずです。その程度のことは知っているのですが、that節についてはよくわかりません。 ちなみに、私のこれまでの理解の仕方はというと、例えば、It is important that we should work hard. という文において、まず、itを登場させることによって、話し手と聞き手の共通の関心事がありますよ。(あるいは、世間の人が感心を持っていることがありますよ)と言っておいて、それから、実はそれはね、こういう事なんですよ。と紹介する構文だと理解していました。 この理解の仕方についても意見をお願いしたいと思います。よろしくお願いします。

「彼は、裕福であったことを誇りに思っている。」 という意味では He is proud to have been rich. He is proud of having been rich. He is proud that he was rich. という3通りの言い方ができると思うのですが、どれも普通の会話で使われている表現なのでしょうか。どれがが口語的とかいった違いがあれば教えてください。

If it is true you shouldn’t stop your effort because all rewarding people were making an effort though the person who made an effort was not necessarily rewarding.
