life-size「等身大の」という表現があります。これは複合語として形容詞になったものですが，これと同じように，the size of ～や that size のように，size を限定することにより，「～の大きさをした」という形容詞のように考えることが可能だと思います。 日本語でも，いきなり「大きさだ」というと意味をなしませんが，「～くらいの大きさだ」といえば，この「大きさだ」は単なる名詞＋だ とは違う，形容動詞的な響きが感じられます。 ～ of a size「同じ大きさの～」の場合は，of が省略しにくいのも，a size では，「大きさをした」という形容詞的には取れないからなのかもしれません。 ただ，一般的には，この「～をした」という形容詞的な意味を持たせる部分を of に見いだして，記述の of を補うとするとわかりやすいと思うのですが。

何の根拠も示さず，主張している内容を理解せず，「意味がない」と切り捨てるのは許されることなのでしょうか。 This box is of the same size as that one. #2でも説明したように，size という名詞を be の補語にすると，「箱」＝「大きさ」という名詞 になるので，of が必要，ただし，of は省略することができます。省略できるというより，省略する方が普通かもしれません。日本人はよく省略と説明しますが，特に目的格の関係代名詞の省略というのは，歴史的には，名詞をSVで後置修飾するというのが関係代名詞より先ですし，発音上も，関係代名詞がないときには，名詞と後のSVを切れ目なく発音するのに対し，関係代名詞がある時には，関係代名詞の前でポーズがある，ということからも省略というのとは違うと思います。 そして，この of の省略というのも詭弁なのかもしれません。size が形容詞なのかもしれません。ただ，that size は that が副詞ということで説明できますが，a city the size of Kyoto「京都ほどの大きさの都市」のような場合，size は形容詞と説明できるのでしょうか。私などには理解できない高尚な考え方では可能なのかもしれませんが，一般には of を補うということで明快に説明できると思います。あくまでも，日本での話ですが，通説になっていると思います。これを「意味がない」というのであれば，偉大な諸先輩方の築いてきたものを否定することになりますよ。
size は常に名詞と見るのは正しくありません。形容詞的に使われる場合があります。日本の英語教育では説明が困難ですが。 in a family of that size と書き換えるのは、原文を変えた後の解釈になります。これでは無意味です。創作しては、答えになりません。 いつも回答者同士が議論するのはみっともないし、違反ですからやめます。

確かに，that には副詞の用法があり，that big のような言い方はします。実は私も一瞬そう思ったのですが，残念ながら，size は形容詞ではなく，名詞です。size が形容詞的だというのであれば，それこそ of を補ってこそだと思います。in a family that big と言うことも可能で，その場合の that は「それほど」という意味の副詞になります。
解りやすくご質問にストレートにお答えしましょう。 S は she, V は found, O が it (この it は to get ～ attention を受けています), C が hard です。 In a family that size は書いてあるままで、In a family of that size ではありません。書き直すことに何も意味はありません。この that は副詞で、量・程度を表す形容詞や副詞を限定しています。「そんな、それ程の、それだけ」といった意味です。すなわち、In a family that size「その程度の大きさの家族では」です。 おそらく、大家族なので、愛情や注目の分け前にあずかりにくい状況なのでしょう。

冒頭の部分は，in a family of that size と書くこともできます。 この of は「記述の of」と呼ばれるもので，代表的なのは of importance など of ＋抽象名詞になるパターンです。 「これは重要だ」というのを，「これはペンだ」と同じ感覚で，This is importance. とはできません。日本語でいうと，「名詞＋だ」と形容動詞の違いが，英語では，be ＋名詞と be ＋形容詞の違いになります。 そして，This is important. という形容詞 important と同じように，be の補語にするために，of importance とすることもできるのです。 同じように，「私は彼と同い年だ」を I am the same age as him. とすると，「私」が「年」というものに等しいとなってしまうので，of the same age とするのが本来の言い方です。しかし，この場合の of は省略されることも多いです。 これは size の場合もあてはまり，This box is of the same size as that one. と言うことができ，この of も省略することがあります。 そして，この of importance などは名詞の後においてその名詞を修飾することも可能です。information of great importance「非常に重要な情報」 すなわち，a family of that size で，「そのような大きさの家族」という意味になります。 上で述べたように，age や size の場合は，of は省略されることがあります。 a machine about the size of a cigarette box「タバコの箱と同じくらいの大きさの機械」のように用いることができます。
一瞬戸惑うかもしれませんが、文意を考えれば分かる問題です。Ｖはfind。thatは関係詞ではなく、その、という指示代名詞です。「そんな大きさの家族では、彼女は愛や注意を引くことが難しいと分かった。」 よくわかりませんが、a family と that size は、名詞の同格、というのでしょうか？
