変ですね。 母親の誕生日なら、her birthday でしょう。his birth なら、彼の誕生/出生/出産ですよね。 そのままの意味だと、「ポゥルの母親は、彼が生まれた時の事を覚えていないことが不満だ。」ですね。 たとえば、難産で苦労したのに、本人はその恩を全く覚えていないとか。 どういうテキストでどういう状況の文章なのか不明ですが、それによっては違うのかも知れません。とりあえず、です。

「his birthday」ではなく「his birth」ですよね。 私は「the things at his birth」、「彼の誕生の際のこと」と理解しました。 「ポールの母親は、ポールが彼の誕生の際のことを知らないと不満を言った」 とならないでしょうか？ 私も「母親の誕生日」では間違いだと思います。

Cleary he did not express his own opinion. →It was clear that he did not express his own opinion. that節で、前の文を書き換えることができるというものですが・・・ He apparently knew the town well. →It appeared that he knew the town well. になるらしいのですが、この時にIt was と何故しないかを初歩的な質問かもしれませんが教えてください。 自分なりに推理してみたのですが、be ＋ 過去分詞となって受動的な意味合いとなってしまうからなのでしょうか？ それとは別に文法自体に前の2つの例と意味合いが違うからなのでしょうか？ はたまた、このapparentlyという単語にはそうしてはいけない何かがあるのでしょうか？ どうぞお願いします。

時制の一致についての質問です。 「彼は知らないと回答した。」 を英語に訳すと、学校では時制の一致で "he replied that he did not know." と習ったと記憶しているのですが、 googleで"he replied that he did not know"と検索すると 約 3,050,000 件がヒットする一方、 "he replied that he does not know"と検索すると 約 2,470,000 件がヒットします。 本当に、後者では間違いなのでしょうか？ 感覚的には後者でもいい（むしろ後者のほうがいい？）ような気もするのですが・・・。 改めて疑問に思ったので質問させていただきます。 英語について、詳しい方にお答えいただけましたら幸いです。 よろしくお願いいたします。
