In the United States, men and women work side by side as equals. でなぜ equals になるのかがわかりません。よろしくお願いいたします。

I meant "keep around" as in like date and marriage. You live around the world so i don't think it would work but.... ここで特に"work"がどういう意味なのか、それから"as in like"はasとlikeが似ているし"as in"という表現があるので"like"は省略できるのではないかと思ったのですが、どうなのでしょうか。御教示下さい。
