動作について教えてください。
剣を鞘に入れるシーンで、 He ran the blade along the top of his forearm, then sheathed it. というのがあります。 along the top of his forearmというのはどこになるんでしょうか。forearmが肘から手首までを指すので、手首の周りということになるんでしょうか。 ご教示よろしくお願いします。

BiHooさん、こんばんは。 No.1さんのお言葉どおり、前腕部の表側(手で言えば甲)ということじゃないのかな。 よく時代劇などで侍が刀を収める時、左手で腰に挿した鞘を押さえて、そこに右手の刀の鍔の部分を持っていくでしょう？ そして左手の親指で鍔元の刀身の峰を押さえたままツーッと刀を引いて、親指に切っ先が届いたところで切っ先が鞘の鯉口に入るので、そこからパチーンと一気に収めるわけですよね。何であんなことをしているかというと、左手でそうやって導いてやらずに刀を収めようとすれば、鞘の鯉口と切っ先が合わずに自分の左手や腹を刺してしまうからなんです。 刀を引いていくとき、鞘と峰を押さえる左手に沿って引くことになるので、その動作を言い表しているのじゃないでしょうか。 He ran the blade along the top of his forearm, then sheathed it. 「彼は鯉口を押さえる腕(かいな)の面(おもて)に沿って刀を滑らせると、それを鞘に収めた。」 間違ってたらごめんなさい。一応、第二の説ということで。 以下、参考まで。 http://www.hataya.co.jp/engawa-katana.html http://geocities.yahoo.co.jp/dr/view?member=ikushinkai&.start=33

そういえば、そんな動作していますね。言われてようやくわかりました。そもそもtop of his forearmがどこかわかっていなかったので、気付きませんでした。topって上方部（手首全体）というより、上面部（手首の上）って感じなんですね。ありがとうございました。

Going to the shore on the first morning of the vacation, Jerry stopped and looked at a wild and rocky bay, and then over to the crowded beach he knew so well from other years. It was enough to make him feel welcome. In a minute, he had swum over and was on the rocks beside them. Then, as he watched, the biggest of the boys dived into the water, and did not come up. Jerry gave a cry of alarm, but after a long time the boy came up on the other side of a big dark rock, letting out a shout of victory. Immediately the rest of them dived and Jerry was alone. He counted the seconds they were under water: one, two, three… fifty… one hundred. At one hundred and sixty, one, then another, of the boys came up on the far side of the rock and Jerry understood that they had swum through some gap or hole in it. どうも上手く訳せません。 For, his works being such as they are without his having seen the best of the modern, it necessarily follows that, if he had seen them, ・・・ beingの用法がよく分かりません。 またTheyが何を指すのか前後の文からは判然としません。 たぶんhis worksを指しているのだと思います。 worksは全文の内容からより正確には作品を指しているようです。 よろしくお願いします。

My father had an ulcer that became infected. It was relatively simple to cure but he refused to believe the doctors. Instead he diagnosed himself with some sort of virus. He stopped taking his medicine. He created his own ointments instead. He’s very intelligent so his reasoning could sound very convincing. It was hard to identify when it crossed the line into mental illness. But the infection never healed. He went from surfing and swimming every day to barely being able to walk. He aged twenty years. And still he refused to go to a doctor. He’d isolate himself from anyone who challenged him. When he finally collapsed and was admitted to a hospital, the doctors said he had the lowest red blood cell count they’d ever seen. Only then did he accept that things were out of his control.
