聖書が書かれた文化的な背景にはユダヤ教があったとおもいます。新約聖書の中心であるイエスはユダヤ教の指導者や法律の学者からのひどい扱いを受けながらも、ユダヤ教の教会で彼の教えを語っていました。そのユダヤ教の文化の中では「頭の上に燃える炭をのせる」のはその人に対して、悔い改めを迫るという意味があるそうです。つまりそのようにすることは教えを広めるという良い働きであり、その様な扱いを受けた人は悔い改めに導かれるので、彼らにとってもそれを行った人にも良いことなのだという意味になります。以上がIt makes them and you better.の意味となります。 It is like heap(ing) burning coals on his headに関しては解説者がおそらく元の英文にingが無かったので追加したのかもしれません。「彼の頭に燃える炭を積むようなことである」とでも訳せます。これがheapだけですと 動作としての「積む」という映像が無くなり「堆積物」ということになりますので、doing niceとcaringの動作との整合性が無くなるように思います。 ともあれ、敵に良いことをしていることになります。

＞この聖書の例えだけでは、敵に良い事をしているのか悪いことをしているのかよく分からないです。 どういった事を意味する例えなのでしょうか？ ユダヤ教の目には目、ウィル・スミス式平手打ちをあえて否定する教えですね。 ブルーの箇所にあるとおり、敵の予期せぬ対応を取ることで相手へショックを与える（不意を突く）。意外な反応に相手は願わくば自らを振り返ったり気づき（のチャンス）を得て、自分は相手と同じレベルに身を落とさない＝両者をより向上させる。 ということと思います。現実ではあいにく相手によりますが。
