1. a type of President だと思います。type は一般的な名詞ですから、その前に何らかのタイプに関することを述べておいてから、「オバマ氏は その タイプだ」 というのなら the を用いることもあるでしょうけれど、その文だけを読む限りでは a type of ... とするのが自然だと感じます。また、President というふうに大文字で始まる場合、それは現職の President を指すものなので、米国大統領という意味合いでは世界に１人だけなので、無冠詞で用いるのが普通だと思います。 2. これも 1. と同様に a type of animal でしょう。animal は 「動物」 の総体を表します。総体なので複数形にはしません。
