以下の英文の解説をお願いします。 亜細亜大学の2016年の入試問題です。 American society claims to reward the best and brightest ( ) of family background. 空欄に入るのは regardless です。 claims to reward the best and brightest の部分が分かりません。 "claim to do"で「～することを主張する」なので、rewardの動詞としての意味を調べましたが、しっくりきません。 そもそも、the best and brughtestは何を修飾しているのでしょうか。 よろしくお願いいたしますm(__)m

American society claims to reward the best and brightest ( ) of family background. ( )に入る可能性で最初に考えるのは、best, brightestに修飾される名詞だと思います。例えばpeopleとか、students, scientistのような人をあらわすもの。 これが選択問題であれば、そう言う人の選択肢がなければ、次にthe best, the brightestで「最高の人びと」「最も聡明な人々」とthe ＋最上級の形容詞で作る名詞と考えるしかありません。reward the best and brightestは"最高で最も聡明な人たち”をrewardすると言う事になるので、rewardに関しての疑問は解消すると思います。 そうするとregardless of = ～に関わらず が選択肢にあったとしたら正解として急浮上し、文としては一旦、regardlessの前で切れていることが想像されます。 その意味では、この質問に回答するには、試験問題の選択肢まで書かれていないと説明しにくいですが、この質問の掲載分だけで自動的にregardlessが正解になることはありません。 American society claims to reward the best and brightest regardless of family background. アメリカのソサエティーは家族の経歴に関わらず最も優れていて聡明な人たちが報われるべきと主張する。 ただ、この問題の英文ちょっとおかしく、おそらく出題の先生がどこかの文から拾ってきて編集した時にしくじったのでしょう。American societyとだけ書いて一般化するのは無理があり、An American society か The American societyが適切と思いますが、この文だとAn は解釈が難しく Theが最も有りえそうです。 あと、もし（）が人に関わる名詞（students, scientistのような）だっと仮定すると、family backgroundは、his/herになるのが自然で、その時点でも正解の可能性が低くなることがわかります。ただそれを解答の手がかりにさせるとしたら、問題としてちょっと細かすぎると思います。

the best and brightest は、映画のタイトルにもなった表現です。下記の Wikipedia には 「最良の、最も聡明な人々」を意味し、1960年代のアメリカ合衆国のケネディとそれを継いだジョンソン政権において安全保障政策を担当した閣僚および大統領補佐官たちを指す。 という説明が出ています。だから、the best and brightest で１つの名詞と見ることができます。バラバラではなくて、そういう組み合わせで用いられる表現です。 ですから、その文全体としては 「アメリカは、出自ではなく、能力に応じて人を評価する社会だといわれる」 といった感じの文だということになります。

空所の部分を判断するのに大きく影響しない部分ではあります。 もちろん、全体の意味がわかった方がよりわかりやすいでしょう。 reward O で「～に報いる」 O には人も物も来ます。 がんばった人であったり、親切な行為のような物が目的語となります。 best や bright は一語では形容詞でしかなく、 目的語になったりはしません。 しかし、最上級になると、the がつくように、名詞的に使うことが可能です。 the ＋形容詞で「～な人々」というのがありますが、 それの最上級版ととらえてもいいかもしれません。 結局、the best and brightest で「最も性格がよく、最も頭がよい人々」 という名詞の意味として reward の目的語になり、 そういう人たちに報いるように→人が報われるように、 主張する。 主語は American society ですが、擬人法的に響きます。

小説の中の一節です。 Probably she had long since deserted Threlfall for some consort able and willing to provide regular meals. ・consortとableの間のスペースは誤植だと思いますが… ・had desertedという過去完了？それならlong sinceがここに入るのは？ ・consortableが修飾する語は？ ・willingのbe動詞が見つからないのですが。 というわけで意味がとれないのです。文法的な解説をお願いいたします。
