far という原級に戻ると、距離的に「遠い、遠く」を基本に、時間的に「はるかに」の意味になり、 さらに、比ゆ的に、程度が「はるかに」という意味で用いられます。 「遠い」の意味では farther - farthest、 比ゆ的に「はるかに」の意味では further - furthest と比較変化する、とも以前は習いましたが、今ではどちらも u の方が用いられることが多いです。 ここではその比ゆ的に「はるかに」の意味で far が比較級や最上級を強めたり、far too ～のように「すぎる」の too を強めたりします。 ここでは developed について、「もっともはるかに」なわけだから、 「もっとも進歩した」であり、 後の方は along が「先に、進んで」の意味があるので、それについて 「もっとも進んだ」となります。 こういう比ゆ的な使い方では程度を強めます。 だから、悪い意味の単語につけば、それを強めることになります。

ありがとうございました。「最もかけ離れた」というのが通常の意味だと思うのですが、なぜ、逆の意味になるのか、そこが良く分かりませんが、とにかく貴重なお時間をありがとうございました。

Tokyo is the biggest city ( ) the three countries． この場合、カッコに入るのはinなんでしょうか、ofなんでしょうか?? ちなみに、the three countriesになっているのはこの文の前に すでに話題に出てきているのでtheがついています。 この場合、もしもthree citiesならofだと思うんですが、 東京に対するcountriesは範囲になるのでinになるのでは。。? ただ、ネットで調べると「ofを使うのは複数の意味を表す語句が続く時です。」 といった規則を書いてあるサイトなども多々あるようなので困っています。
