The economy of thought produced by this approch , and the new understanding it gave rise to , made further progress possible. という英文なんですが、and the new understanding it gave rise toのところが理解できません。このitはなんでしょうか？

これは文脈次第で解釈が変わるのではないでしょうか。 調べましたところ原文は https://books.google.co.jp/books?isbn=0387987657 の様です。 大筋の意味はお判りかとおもいますが、"and the new understanding it gave rise to" の特に it については economy of thought を指しているのか、approachを指しているのか わかりにくいところです。両方の場合を想定して訳しますと（意訳ですが） it = and the new understanding it gave rise to とした場合 この新たなアプローチから生まれた経済思想、そしてその経済思想がもたらした新たな解釈がさらなる発展を促した。 it = approach とした場合 この新たなアプローチから生まれた経済思想と新たな解釈がさらなる発展を促した。 要するに経済思想と新たな解釈が更なる発展につながったという話ですが、本質問にある文章の全文から斜め読みしますと、つまりは「画期的なアプローチ」が話の中心になっている様ですね。従い、ここでは数学的に意義ある新たなアプローチ（考え方）により経済思想が生まれ、またそのアプローチにより新たな解釈が可能になった。だからそれらがその後の更なる発展につながった・・・ と考えるのが自然かと思われます。 従い、 and the new understanding it gave rise to のところは直訳的には「それ（アプローチ）が誘発した新たな理解」 わかりやすい日本語（意訳）すれば、「それにより導かれた新たな解釈」という感じになるかと私はおもいます。 ※新たなアプローチにより生まれた経済思想そのものが新たな理解の境地を開いたという解釈も可能かとおもいます。 この文章は本書を熟読して初めて正解に辿り着けると思いあｍす。

it は the economy of thought ですね。 this approach だとすると、 the economy of thought も、the new understanding も、 生み出す主体が同じ approach となって、受動的な produced by ～と 能動的な it gave rise to ～で並列する意味はなくなってしまいます。 まず、this approach があって、それによって生み出された the economy of thought、 これと、それ（the economy of thought）が生み出した新しい理解 で and で結ばれるというのが自然な流れです。 内容面の前に英語の書く流れとしてこう考えないと不自然です。 内容的にも問題ないと思います。

itは、the economy of thought produced by this approach（このアプローチによって生み出された思考の経済）を指しています。したがって、and the new understannding it gave rise toとは、「その思考の経済が生み出した新しい（その問題にたいする）理解」です。したがって、文全体は、直訳すると このアプローチによって生み出された思考の経済、およびその思考の経済によってもたらされた（その問題にたいする）新しい理解がさらなる進歩を可能にした。 という意味です。なお、give rise toとはproduceと同じような意味で、「生み出す」というような意味。
