They were obliged to cooperate with CIA,but not in a defamatory way. この文章の訳を教えていただけないでしょうか。よろしくお願いいたします。

彼らは、それが不名誉になるいる訳ではないが、CIA への協力を余儀なくされた。 普通専門家のアドバイスを仰ぐのではなく、CIF, FBI といった連邦政府機関へ協力「しなければならなかった」と言うと、協力者側にも後ろめたいところがあって、自分が起訴されないよう、immunity, amnesty, leniency 等を受けるために協力を余儀なくされる、と想像する人がほとんどだと思います。また、訴追免責や罪の軽減のための plea bargain (司法交渉) を受け入れ書類にサインをするとその協力者は一般の容疑者、犯罪者に与えられる権利の一部を放棄しなければなりません。 ただこの文中にある人達は、そのような問題は無いけれども、ある理由により協力しなければならなかった、という事です。

素直な論文タイプなら読めても、こういうのは読みにくいでしょうね。 でも、かための文章でもよく見かける書き方です。 They were obliged to cooperate with CIA, but they were not obliged to cooperate with CIA in a defamatory way. 彼らは CIA に協力せざるを得なかった、でも（協力すると言っても）（他者を）傷つけるような方法でなく。

文脈が分からないと、その文だけでは的確な訳は無理な気がします。 たとえばですが、「彼らは CIA に協力せざるを得なかったが、それによって名誉が傷つくというわけではなかった」 とか。

Amy delivered the criticism in a way that seemed to her self-evidently considerate . 関係副詞のhowの使い方についてよくわかりません。a(the) way = how でa(the) way が省力されてhow が単独で使われることが多いと考えていたのですが、この文の１行目のa way のところを、how 一語で置き換えて良いのでしょうか。つまり、 Amy delivered the criticism in how that seemed to her self-evidently considerate . でも良いのでしょうか。
