… And, it can't be a match the domoralised Australians will be looking forward to given captain Paul Okon, Muscat and striker Jhon Aloisi returned home immediately after last night's loss to attend family weddings and will mis the playoff, while defender Craig Moore will be suspended after being read-carded in the 85th minute. Certainly, it is going to take all of coach Frank Farina's nous and inspiration to cajole an Australian squad sick and tired of football and desperate to return to family and friends after long and exhausting seasons in Europe. Unfortunately, they should not be in the position they now find themselves, for this was without doubt the one that got away (*1). … (2)this was (without doubt) the one that got away.

get away (phr v) [3] (informal) to take a holiday away from the place you normally live: Will you manage to get away this summer? get awayをこの意味(「休みを取る」)で把握すると、(a)前段落の意味(=くたくたで「休みを取」りたがっている選手達をコーチが…) Unfortunately, they should not be in the position they now find themselves, for this was without doubt the one that got away. (A) "this"="the one"="本試合"【←farsideさんの着想で重要】 (B) "get away"="一旦休暇を取る"【←私が採用した意味】 (C) "should not be"=仮定法過去(現在の事実に反する仮定)で、「本来なら…」

(B')get away (phr v)[5] "the one that got away" ="something good that you nearly had or that nearly happened, but did not" (出典LDCE) (訳') 残念なことだが、「豪州チームは、本来なら現在のような低い順位ではないだろうに(=本来ならもっと高い順位にいるはずだ)」と言わざるをえない。

(the play off game)

In recent years, there has been a lot of argument of having classes on Saturdays in elementary schools in Japan. A five-day school week started as a part of the new education system known as “yutori education” and these days it has been argued that we should do away with this system as soon as possible. But this system shouldn’t be abolished for following 3 reasons. First, it helps children to get communication ability. In Japanese elementary school, they usually don’t have discussions in the classes. They only listen to the teachers speaking at their desk, having little time to have interactive communications. It obviously prevents children from getting communication ability. But if Saturday is a holiday, they will have a lot of time to spend with their friends and families, and have a lot of time to have interactive communications. Actually, in my childhood I used to go a park to play catch with my father on Saturdays and talked a lot with him. There is no doubt that it has great effects on communication ability to talk a lot with friends and families. And it also prompts children to be independent. In school, they do only things that the teachers say to do. But when they graduate, no one tells them what to do. They have to find what to do on their own. If Saturday is a holiday, they will have more chance to know themselves, and to think about what they should do, that is, to be independent. In addition, apart from the educational problems, it will bring us economic effectiveness. If it is holiday on Saturdays, more people will go traveling with their family, and spend a lot of money on their way. Even if you don’t go traveling, we will have more chance to spend money to have pleasure. Actually, after playing catch I used to go to batting center with my father on Saturdays. There is no doubt that we use more money if children are at home than if they are in school.

My husband is a high-ranking officer in the military. He has worked hard to achieve his current position and is highly respected. The problem is, his family treats him like a child. In a few months, there will be a formal ceremony to mark his change of command. My in-laws will be in attendance, and they are certain to embarrass him. They insist on calling him by his unusual childhood nickname (he cringes every time). They talk down to him and give him gifts meant for children, such as books for teen boys (last Christmas), a small child's backpack (last birthday) and now a child's piggy bank, which they intend to present to him in front of his unit at the ceremony. These gifts are not intended as jokes. My husband is always gracious on the outside but horrified on the inside. Tom Waits の The one that got awayという曲の歌詞を日本語に訳していただけませんか? Well, the gigolo's jumpin' salty Ain't no trade out on the streets Half past the unlucky And the hawk's a front row seat Dressed in full orchestration Stage door Johnny's got to pay And sent him home Talking 'bout the one that got away Well, could've been on Easy Street Could've been a wheel With irons in the fire And all them business deals But the last of the big time losers Shouted before he drove away I'll be right back as soon as I crack The one that got away The ambulance drivers, they don't give a shit They just want to get off work And the short stop And the victim already gone berserk And the shroud tailor measures him For a deep six holiday The stiff is froze, the case is closed On the one that got away Now Jim Crow's directing traffic With them cemetery blues With them peculiar looking trousers Them old Italian shoes And a wooden kimono was all ready To drop in San Francisco Bay But he's mumbling something All about the one that got away Costello was the champion At the St.Moritz Hotel And the best this side of Fairfax Reliable sources tell But his reputation is at large And he's at Ben Frank's every day Waiting for the one that got away He's got a snake skin sport shirt And he looks like Vincent Price With a little piece of chicken And he's carving off a slice But someone tipped her off She'll be doing a Houdini now any day She shook his hustle A Greyhound bus'll take the one that got away Andre is at the piano Behind the Ivar in the sewers With a buck a shot for pop tunes And a fin for guided tours He could've been in Casablanca He stood in line out there all day Now he's spilling whiskey And learning songs about a one that got away Well, I've lost my equilibrium And my car keys and my pride The tattoo parlor's warm And so I hustle there inside And the grinding of the buzz-saw "What you want that thing to say?" I says, "Just don't misspell her name Buddy, she's the one that got away" どうぞよろしくお願いします。
