下記英文解釈について教えていただきたいです。よろしくお願いします♪

　動詞の原形 + ing は、よく 付帯状況 を表すとか言われます。そんな用語とか理屈とかはどうでもいいですが、Originate wheat cultivation ... と始めると変な文になると思われませんか？　命令文になってしまいます。

　この文の場合、wheat cultivation の 起源 が the valley of the Tigris River だということを先に述べてから、本題が述べられています。本題を述べる前に前提となる話をちょっと出しておく、そういった場合に用いられる形です。形として知っておけば十分だと思います。

　そんな部分にばかり目をつけていては、文を読めません。何を言っているのか、ということを把握するのが先でしょう。そして内容が把握できれば、おのずと働きについても見えてきます。

　being crossed ... が different strains of wheat を修飾する関係にあります。「交配して新種を生み出していった」 というわけですね。

> combining の主語はどれでしょうか？

　この combining も、Originating の時と同じように、付帯状況と見ていいと思います。文を短くすれば　This became a conscious process combining the desirable characteristics of the parent strains.　となります。combining 以下が、その前に書かれていることの下部状況を表しています。同時進行です。

　直訳すると、「これは親株の好ましい性質を結びつける意識的な過程となった」 となりますが、「結びつける」 の主語は何かと問うことに意味があると思われますか？

　これも付帯状況だというひと言で片付けてもいいのですが、ここでは which are grown around the world を短くしたものだと見てもいいかもしれません。

　being を外して growing でも文として成り立ちます。ただ、その場合は 「世界中で栽培されている」 という意味ではなくて、「世界中で育ちつつあるさまざまな種類の小麦」 といった感じになります。

　「理由」 も何も、その that は指示代名詞です。この文の場合には that the United States is blessed almost a billion hectares of land suited for agriculture （合衆国には農耕に適した十億ヘクタールくらいの土地に恵まれている） という内容を表しています。その that を関係代名詞か何かだと考えたのだとしたら、文の内容を全く把握できていないと言わざるを得ませんん。

　「科学者たちは X に関する幅広い理解を得てきている」 という文の中に 「副詞」 がありますか？　a broad understanding of X という形で、X の内容が how 以下に述べられているというだけのことです。

　だって、it obtains from ... という文が the raw materials を修飾しているわけで、it を置かないことには主語の無い文になってしまうからでしょう。この文の場合は it = the human body なのは明らかだと思いますが ・・・

> where they are stored と続く理由は何でしょうか?

　やたらと 「理由」 ばかりお尋ねですね。理由は原文そのものから引き出すのが自然だと思います。where が関係代名詞として使われているので 「そこにおいて」 とでも訳せばいいでしょうか。

　ただ、intense というのが私には分かりませんでした。intestine なら分かりますが ・・・　質問者さまはどう解釈なさったのでしょうか。私は intense を intestine に読み替えて the small intestine を 「小腸」、the large intestine を 「大腸」 と解しました。

　栄養素が留め置かれる 「場所」 のことを述べているので where という語が使われているのは自然で、特に 「理由」 を考えるほどのものだとは思えないのですが ・・・

　余りにも 「理由」 ばかり求めていると、こういう単純な文において、「主語」 が見つからずに当惑することになってしまいます。

　この文は唐突に現れたところを見ると、タイトルのようなものではないでしょうか。少なくとも、タイトルのような意識を持って書かれたもののように思われます。

　この文は、名詞を並べただけの形をしています。「たいていの減量の努力、つまり体重が増加しては元の体重に戻そうとすること」 のような文において、主語がどれだとかは、まぁどうでもいいことではないでしょうか。

　新聞などの記事のタイトルが代表ですが、そのようなものにおいては、動詞がなかったりする文などは珍しくありません。

　これも 「理由」 などではなく、文の内容の一部であるに過ぎません。この文においては、one of those several reasons is ... の代わりに単純化して示しているだけのことです。

文字数をオーバーしてしまうので、ここまでしか書けませんでした。質問は別々にした方がいいかも。それと英文の中に日本語の文を挿入すると読みにくいです。
