3番です。 えー、えらそうに回答しましたが、後半の文についての、あたしの解釈は間違ってますね。すみません。 the amount of money /the two partners make off / of each other. それぞれがもうける金額ではなく、二人でもうける金額ですね。ANASTASIAKさんの回答を読んで、納得しました。

make money off of ～ で「～で金もうけをする、～を金にする」ですよね。 この文の状況はargument をしている２人がいるのですから、「その論争のどっちをsupport するかを決める便利な物差し（判断基準）が手近にある。二人が互いに相手から得ている金の金額だ」ということではないでしょうか。 「得ている金」というのは、＃３さんのお書きのように「せしめる」という意味かもしれませんし、その人のおかげでお金が入る状態（例えば漫才師で片方の才能で売れている場合、とか。この表現で検索したらドアーズのジム・モリソンの例も出てきました。あのグループは彼の存在がものすごく大きかったですからね）かもしれません。

How about taking off the amount I paid for my valid ticket and make it count against the full price? 上記の英文（How about 以下から）の意味が訳せなく困っています。 taking off the amount I paid for..は『・・に払った分はさし引いて』のような意味だと思うのですが あっていますでしょうか？ ただ make it count against the full priceが分かりません。 count against は『～に不利に』のような 意味らしいのですが。。

コロンブスがテーマの長文問題に出てきた一文なのですが、見てもらえますでしょうか？ １．“No doubt many of the discoverers were adventurers driven by the hope to make a fortune for themselves. まず“.....were adventurers driven by......”の部分でadventurersって名詞でしょうか、動詞でしょうか？そして文の構造自体解釈につまずいてしまっています。 ２．“But to look over the horizon out of sheer curiosity had been a part of the European tradition since the times of the ancient Greeks” “.....out of sheer curiosty.....”の部分は、“真の好奇心から外れて”と訳すのでしょうか、“航路から外れた好奇心”と訳すのでしょうか。 どちらも意味が通りそうで自分では正しく読めません。 力を貸していただきたいです。 お願いします。
