どれが いちばん いい訳
「何度もやったが、コンピュータはどうしても動かなかった。」 を英訳してみました。 どれが いちばんいいですか？ (1)Though I tried many times, the computer would not work. (2)However many times I tried, the computer would not work. (3)I tried to run the computer many times unsuccessfully. (4)With many attempts, I failed to run the computer.

こんなにいろいろな文を考えられるなんて、私なんかから見るとうらやましいです。 どれも悪くないと思います。 英文の問題ではないのですが、「コンピュータが動かなかった」 という表現の具体的な内容がいまひとつはっきりしません。スイッチを入れて bios が立ち上がって、そこからシステムが起動されるわけですが、どの段階のことなのか。スイッチを入れても電源が入らないことを「動かない」 といってるのか。あるいは、システムは立ち上がっているものの、何らかのプログラムを実行しようとしたが実行できなかったというのか。その内容によって、表現に違いが生じる可能性があるかもしれないと思います。 「コンピュータを起動する」 であれば、to start a computer が一般的な表現ではないでしょうか。あるいは boot という動詞を使うこともあるでしょうけど。 そうであれば I tried to start a computer in vain after many trials. みたいな感じでも言えそうな気がします （これが正しい英文かどうかは保証できませんが）。 ネットで調べると、たとえば Wired connection does not work, even after many trials （何度も試みたけど、有線接続が確立できなかった） というのがありました （下記のところです）。「ネットへの接続が出来ない」 ということを not work で表しているように思われます。質問者の (1) と (2) での使い方に似ていると思います。 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2186693 次の文もありました。 The wired connection does not work any more. （どうしても有線接続が機能しません） この場合の work は、ある （期待された） 動作をしないという意味で用いられているように思われます。コンピュータ自体は立ち上がっている （起動している） ようです。 また、 I tried to boot with some live CD. ともあります。この boot は 「起動させる」 という意味に取れます。この場合には、コンピュータ自体をLive CD から起動してイーサネット・カードを認識するかどうかを試してみたのでしょう。boot という動詞が使われていますから、システム自体を立ち上げるという意味だと思われます。 個人的には (1) や (2) の文は、I tried とあって、そこで区切りが置かれているので、何を try したのかが具体的に分からず、ちょっと不安になります。４つの文の中では、私の好みとしては (3) がスッキリしているように感じました。なお、私の感覚では run は 「プログラムを走らせる」 という場合に用いられるように思います (to run a program)。

表現一つ一つがどうとかいう前に（そこも問題ではあるんだが）、何が動かなかったかをもっと前に出したほうがいいでしょうね。 それができているのは(3)だけだが、しかしunsuccessfullyの位置が悪い）。(4)に至ってはわざわざwith句の順序を前に出している。 どれもコンピュータでどうしたかったか、具体性がない。起動しなかったのか、何らかのアプリが動かなかったのか。 英語に対する感覚がおかしいんですよ、どれもね（例えば、日本語と英語が一対一対応しているかのような誤解、それによる無思考な記号操作が感じられる）。 会話を意識して平易に多少具体的に言うとして、例えば以下などでもいいでしょう。 I tried to boot up my computer again and again, but it wouldn't start.

I am a very private person, but I have a family member who asks too many questions (of everyone) all the time -- silly questions, personal questions, medical questions, etc. I have spoken to her privately about this -- telling her that I am not comfortable with the constant questions -- multiple times. i was not tying to die だと、死ぬとおもったけどできなかったですよね？ （I tried to die、が死のうとして、死ねた、なので） なのでどう英訳すればいいのでしょうか？ とりあえず、 I did not intend to die. としたものの硬すぎますかね？（あ、チャットです） どんな言い方があるかお教えください。

つづけてすいません。ペンパルからの文ですが、今回分りづらくて、質問させてもらいました。私がなんとなく理解したのは、今週末はBBQしないつもりということしか分りません。なんとなくですが、不満がかかれているようなきがしてならないのですが・・・ I am not probably going to go to my friend BBQ on Sunday because everyone is bringing there friends with them. So I think I will probably do nothing this weekend. I'm glad to see that you work!! Even though you work long hours, it's still great!!! I`m not sure of when I will finish school because there are alot of circumstances involved. First, I have just moved to a different state so I don`t want to go to school immediatly because my tuition would be very high (takai!!!). And then, I am also hoping to get a sponsor for my tuition when I begin my new school out here in California. There are hospitals which would sponsor my schooling but in return I have to work for that hospital for at least one year after graduating. It`s okay but I am very picky and can`t decide who I would rather work for. Another circumstance is that some of my completed courses will not transfer and so I will not receive credit for those classes. It is frustrating because either I will have to do those classes again or I will have to complete some similar classes to even get credit for my work. いつも御世話になっています(^_^)看護学校に通う子からのメールです。 (1)when I begin my new school out here in California. この部分のoutはどのように訳したらいいのでしょうか？ (2)たびたびcreditとういう単語がでてくるのですがこれは信用と訳したほうがいいのでしょうか？？ (3) It is frustrating because either I will have to do those classes again or I will have to complete some similar classes to even get credit for my work. の部分はどこで区切って訳したらいいのか全くわかりません。誰かお時間とれるかたお願いしますm(__)m
