iffy historyはNo.2さんの訳されたように、歴史におけるifでもよさそうに思います。 時間はさかのぼることができない。 path dependentについては、”枝分かれしてゆく道すじを辿るようなものである”、と言うのは、ひとたび歴史的事件があるひとつの方向に向かって動き出すと、その時点で、他の道すじに導かれる結末は、実現不可能となるからだ。 とすると、ちょっとわかりやすくなります。 全文訳に興味があるようでしたら、補足をどうぞ。

述べられている内容は単純なものなのに、きちんと訳さなければならないとなると、ものすごくむつかしいですね。 「もしもこうであったならということを仮定すれば、発端となった要因が必然的に重要なものであったのかどうかということに検討を加える余地が生まれるわけだが、そこには 「歴史における if」 に付きものの陥穽が存在する。扱い方を誤れば、仮定を設定することで歴史の意味を無にしてしまいかねない。すなわち、ある出来事が現実に起こったのなら、他の可能性も同等に扱うことは出来ない。時の流れは不可逆的なものである。歴史的な出来事には 「不可避な必然性」 があるという言い方がされるが、それは何らかの歴史的な出来事がいったん発生した以上は、他にもこういう展開もあったかもしれないという可能性は、実際に生じた出来事と同等の蓋然性を持ち得ないということだ。生じた出来事は、生じるべくして生じたのである」 すごい日本語になってしまいましたが、内容を 「紹介」 するのではなくて、「訳す」 ということになると、あまり原文からかけ離れた文章にも出来ないので、時には原文よりも分かりにくいものになることがあります （そこが私のような素人とプロの違いかもしれません）。もちろん、仮に訳してみたものなので、人に読んでもらうものなら、さらに手を加えてより自然な日本語の文章になるようにする必要があるかもしれませんけれども。
