What time period does the main timeline show? How many years is that? What time period does the lower timeline show? How many years is that? Which occurred first, Rome defeating the Carthaginian navy or Hannibal destroying the Roman army at Cannae? Why is it useful to have a separate timeline for 220-200 BCE?

Because Carthage had a military alliance with Syracuse and participated in the fight against Messina. Hannibal lured the Roman army into a narrow pass, ambushed them from the hills and defeated them. Because more and more men joined the Roman military after the defeat at Cannae, and also because wealthy citizens covered the cost of war. Hannibal laid siege to Saguntum in 220 BCE. He was defeated at Zama.

(2)Simply because, if you have had a full experience living and learning overseas, you are likely to have changed, so the place you return to may itself appear to have changed, as indeed it might have. (3)But as you try to settle back into your former routine, you may recognize that your overseas experience has changed some or many of your ways of doing things, even what it means to “be yourself”. (2)2文目のthatは代名詞のthatとして、"what was read was worthless"を指している、ということでよいでしょうか。 In the past, the period between dinner and bed was great time for reading, since there were no such things as radio or television. Generally what read was worthless, but in spite of that it helped to breed the reading habit.

After the discovery of some unburied skeletons on the highest, and therefore latest, street levels at Mohenjo Daro, some scholars assumed that the forts that Indra was destroying were the walled cities of the Indus Valley. But the Late Harappan cities were never destroyed by warfare, and there is no evidence of large groups of people coming from outside South Asia.Historians believe that the mysterious skeletons were people who died from contagious diseases. They were left unburied in abandoned parts of the city so they would not infect the grave diggers. So what happened around 1900 BCE? For many years, historians believed that invaders called Aryans poured into the Indus Valley and, with the help of the horse and bronze or iron weapons, destroyed the Late Harappan civilization. But archaeologists can't find evidence of major warfare, and the body types of the people living in the Indus Valley did not change during this time period.More likely, the disappearing Saraswati River stqained the Late Harappan way of life past the breaking point.Satellite photos of the dried riverbed and excavations along its banks show that the river was huge at one time, almost five miles across. As old ways of living and trade broke down, the people of the Indus Valley began to look around for other ways to stay alive.People from the countryside and highlands who spoke the Indo-Aryan language, people who had known amd traded with the Harappans for many years, became more powerful over time until they could challenge the Harappans' power.

Many Westerners, on the other hand, would find it hard to understand why some Japanese spend the equ ivalent of up to one or two years' income on a car that they spend more time polishing than driving. For the same reason, they cannot understand how young women in their twenties spend thousands of dollars on vacations abroad where they buy tens of thousands of dollars worth of clothes, bags, shoes, and accessories "because they are so cheap." They would be even more surprised if they found out that many of these same people live in tiny apartments or in the same house as their parents. It all depends on what people value.
