文法
Afrer twenty years of being very successful, fast-food restaurants are no longer doing as well as they were. という英文の、being を文法的に説明して下さい。また、are no longer doing の部分のdoing の訳し方を教えて下さい。「もはやしていない」ではへんですよね。

補足、承りました。#1です。 >being の後のvery successfulが名詞ではなく副詞＋形容詞になっているのでbeingを補うということでいいのでしょうか？ 補語が形容詞のsuccessfulで、veryがそれを修飾する副詞ですので、beingによって全体を動名詞としているわけですので、仰る通りで正しいです。 >beingを省いてAfter twenty years of very successful には出来ないのですね。 文法的にはエラーになります。テストの解答などでは使わないほうがいいでしょう。 しかし友人との会話などなら、たいていは間違わずに分かってはもらえますので、その程度の文法エラーは気にせずに、たくさん話すほうがいいです。

Whatever mistakes they have made, in their growing and learning, are best forgotten. 上の文章の that is about as much about it as they want to hear. が訳せません、 自分なりに考えた訳ですが、 「それ(that=They don't mind our telling them=彼らに対し我々が彼に言うのを嫌がること)はほぼ同程度の子どものころについての（about it）量である、 その同程度とは彼らが聞きたいと思う程度である」 となり、日本語の体をなしておりません。 文法も代名詞が何を指しているかもさっぱり分かりません、 お分かりになれば教えてください。
