「存在」という訳語は old の原義にある「誕生（出現）してから長い年月がたっている」 この「出現」を出しているにすぎません。 be を「存在する」の意味で訳しているのでなく， be old で「出現してから長い年月がたっている」 これを「昔から存在している」と訳しているだけです。 まあ，無理やり人間に当てはめると He is old. であれば確かに「昔から存在している」わけです。 is で「存在」というわけじゃないです。

私ならこう訳してみたいです。 その知識はすごく古臭いけど、今まさに真価を認められ始めています。 「はるか昔から存在している」という訳し方は、初歩者や中級者には 疑問を起こさせます。「古臭くても」今も存在しているという証拠には ならないでしょうか。 例えば、「ｋの和風建築は古臭い江戸時代の伝統を生かしている」など。

old は「人やものが誕生（出現）してから長い年月を経過している」 というのが原義です。 だから，人でなく建造物でも The temple is over one thousand years old. のような言い方をします。 もちろん，old でも「古臭い」的な意味が出ることもありますが， old-fashioned とか，obsolete, archaic のような語を使うことが多いです。
