earlierとbeforeの違いは？

ご質問をいただきましたので、 ≫ また通常I was earlierとかI was beforeとだけで語られますと「私はearilerであり、私はbeforeである」と受け取られかねません ＞すみません、ここが 意味がわからなかったです。 「私は、？？であり、 私は、？？である。」 通常 I was xxxxという時にすぐに了解されることは「私はｘｘｘｘである」という意味にとらえがちであるという意味です。日本語に訳してみ見ると、「I was earlier=私は何かより早い時期でした」であり、「I was before=私は前でした」ということで意味が漠然としてしまいます。英語でも日本語でも前後になにか十分な説明がないと文章としては「未完」あるいは「あいまい」となってしまうと言うことを申し上げたかったのです。 ひとつ訂正したいと思います。回答の中でbeforeは最初のwasにかかっていると申し上げましたが、直前のwasにかかっていると思います。

It did not take to long before, I think it was 2 weeks? that is ok, thanks for sending it to me ペンパルとの内容なのですが、前回届くまで何日くらいかかった？ときいたのですが、これがその返信なのですが、前回の小包は受け取ってないと言ってるのでしょうか？？？ It did not take to long before が上手に訳せませんでした。 以前物々交換をしまして、その時、小型包装物(追跡がない)で送ったのですが、受け取ってくれたと思っていたのですがdid not take to long beforeというのは長い間受け取らなかったよ。という意味合いでしょうか？

「疲れていたが、私は寝る前に4時間英語を勉強した。」 の英訳について 模範解答はThough I was tired, I studied English for four hours before I went to bed.なのですが、 出来事の順序としては 勉強→→寝る→→現在 となるのでbefore以前の文まで過去形で表すのは不自然に感じました。 この場合過去完了となり、Though I had been tired, I had studied for four hours before I went to bed. と表すのがよいのでは？と思っているのですが、どうでしょうか。
