私自身、earlierの表現は使わないことと、nativeではないのでニュアンス的なことを語るのは信頼性に欠けるのですが、"earlier"は"a while ago"のような「先ほどまで」という感覚であり、"before"は"in the past"という「過去には、以前は」というような感覚があります beforeにはeventが必要と言っているのは、前置詞として使用した場合のことではないですか? Are you tired?というのはin the past的な時間で語っている内容ではなくて、朝起きてからそれまでの時間の範囲の中で「今」tired?と言ってるのであり、答える側も同じ時間枠を共有したうえで、「さっきまでは」という表現で呼応したと思われます (つまり、「今日」という時間の範囲) もし、事前にお互いで「一週間前から疲れている」という事実を共有していたのであれば、"I was, before"という発話は不自然ではないかと思いますが・・・ つまり、「(一週間前に"疲れた"と言っていたけど)今はどう?(疲れてる?)」「yes I was (tired at that time) before but not now」これならbeforeでいいような気がします(逆にearlierは不自然です) earlierというのはある時間の枠の中で「早い時間帯」を表現する言葉ですから、beforeの「今より前」という感覚とは異なる意味合いを持ってますので、もともと比較することができないのかもしれません 結果して同じ時間帯を表すことになるのであれば、どっちを使っても不自然ではないのかもしれませんが、1)の文において、機械的に"I was, before"と言い換えることはできないと思います(話し手と聞き手の各々が語っている時間枠が異なってしまって、会話が成立する条件が整っていない)

It did not take to long before, I think it was 2 weeks? that is ok, thanks for sending it to me ペンパルとの内容なのですが、前回届くまで何日くらいかかった？ときいたのですが、これがその返信なのですが、前回の小包は受け取ってないと言ってるのでしょうか？？？ It did not take to long before が上手に訳せませんでした。 以前物々交換をしまして、その時、小型包装物(追跡がない)で送ったのですが、受け取ってくれたと思っていたのですがdid not take to long beforeというのは長い間受け取らなかったよ。という意味合いでしょうか？

「疲れていたが、私は寝る前に4時間英語を勉強した。」 の英訳について 模範解答はThough I was tired, I studied English for four hours before I went to bed.なのですが、 出来事の順序としては 勉強→→寝る→→現在 となるのでbefore以前の文まで過去形で表すのは不自然に感じました。 この場合過去完了となり、Though I had been tired, I had studied for four hours before I went to bed. と表すのがよいのでは？と思っているのですが、どうでしょうか。
