You are who you are as a man and your worth is not tied to what you do. and でのつながりは部分的な場合も多いですが，ここでは単純に ２文をつなげています。 この who you are は what you are としても同じ。 what I am で「今の私」，what she was で「過去の彼女」 でおなじみですが，what は「人やものがそうである状態」を表します。 ものの場合だけでなく，人格や性質を表しますので，人間にも使えます。 そして，人間の場合には who も使えます。 who you are as a man で「あなたが人として，今実際そうである状態」 この what/who you are とよく対比されるのが what you have「あなたが持っているもの」で財産とか所有物を表します。 ここでは what you do「あなたがすること」 日常的に，趣味として，職業としてしていること。 be tied to ～で「～に関連している，関係している」 あなた（一般的に人）という存在は，実際の人としての性質・状態のことであって， あなた（人）の価値は，（趣味や）職業によって決まるのではない。

not so much A as B で「AというよりむしろB」という意味ですよね？ ところで、 A man's worth lies not so much in what he has as in what he is. (人間の価値は財産よりむしろ人柄にある) という文の in の位置がなぜそこなのか、僕にはよく分かりません。 なぜ、A man's worth lies in not so much what he has as what he is. という文ではダメなんですか？
