～だが、to以下に限らない （to以下だけではない、 to以下だけとは限らない） が直訳です。何か例文が出せればもっときちんと 回答できるのですが...。昔英文契約書の仕事を していてよく見かけたフレーズです。 契約書の話ですが、想像もしなかった事故とかが あるかもしれないので「事故の場合は責任を とりません、事故といっても交通事故だけでは ありませんよ」という感じで使っていました。 これで実際あてはめれば意味がつかめるのでは ないでしょうか？ スミマセン、簡単な答えしかできなくて...。

Symptoms of CVS include eye strain, blurry vision, dry eyes, headaches, and even neck and shoulder pain. including but not limited to の文法がどのようになっているのか理解できないです。 including computers, tablets, and cell phones. という形であればincludingと後に続く名詞で出来ていると理解できるのですが、 but not limited to がどういったものなのかわからないです。 including but not limited to computers, tablets, and cell phones この文章の意味は、「コンピュータ、タブレットやスマホを含むが、それらに限らない」ということを意味している、 文法的には、分詞構文を形成している includingとnot limited を等位接続詞butで繋がっている、という理解で合っているのか自信がないです。 解説宜しくお願いします。

最初に文法書、辞書には普通は not to と書いてあります。 この前、英英辞典を見てたら [miss] 1.to not be able to go to something or do something と書いてありました。これは自分の勘では not to にすると「何処かに行く、または何かをすることをできない」となり、辞書通りだと「何処かに行けない、または何かをすることができないこと」と「こと」で”説明っぽさ”が出ているように思いました（toはtoだけど）。まずこれを皆さんどう思いますか？ 次にこれだと両方意味は同じですが、ネットで --- http://okwave.jp/qa/q2217132.html No.7 What I said is not to do it. 私が言ったのはそれをやれではない、とWhat I said is to not do it私が言ったのはそれをやるなです。 No.5 １．What I asked him is to not go there. なぜなら、これを、 ２．What I asked him is not to go there. とすると、意味が変わってしまうから。つまり、 １は、「そこへ行かないように頼んだ。」であるのに、２は、「そこへ行くことを頼んだのではない。」となるから。 --- 意味が変わっています。こういう場合もあるのでしょうか？ 回答よろしくお願いします。

とある本で、 Men but not women also show evidence of nostalgic attachment to cars from their youth. とありました。 おおざっぱに意訳すると、 「男性は、若い頃に見た車に懐かしい愛情を見せる。」になると思いますが、 女性はどう見ているのかが「but not」の訳し方が分からなかったため、わかりませんでした。 どなたか、アドバイスをお願いします。

英語の表現について，悩んでいます． Aでなく，Bであるということを言うとき， not A but B という構文が使えると思います．この構文で，AやBに名詞以外をあてはめることは可能でしょうか？ 例えば， The Condition is not essential but the most simple and fundamental. 「この条件は必須ではないが，最も単純かつ基本的である」 のように，形容詞(補語)であったり， This is not limited to the case A but holds in general. 「これはAの場合だけでなく，一般に成り立つ」 のように，動詞でも使えるものなのでしょうか． ご存知の方おりましたら，よろしくお願いします．

手持ちの参考書には、not A but Bの構文では、ＡとＢには文法上対等のものを置く、とあります。 次の英文の場合はどちらが正しいのでしょうか？ １．I went not to school but to a library. ２．I went to not school but a library. 私は１．が正しいと思ってきたのですが、１．の場合はＡＢ共に前置詞句で、２．の場合は名詞とどちらも対等になっています。 １．でも２．でも良いのか、２．が間違いならその理由は何か、説明お願いいたします。（例文が分かりにくかったらすみません。）
