like には「好きだ」という動詞とはまったく違った意味があります。 同じスペルでありながら，別の意味です。 たとえば bear で「熊」「生む」の意味になるように。 英語はアルファベットの組み合わせによって単語ができますので， 偶然，同じスペルになることがでてきます。 結論として，like には前置詞（あるいは形容詞）として， 「～のような（に）」「～に似ている」 というまったく別の意味があるのです。 その昔，元巨人軍のクロマティが A Girl Like You で「君みたいな女の子」 という歌を出したのですが，テレビ局が勝手に A Girl Likes You「ある女の子が君を好きだ」 と訂正していました。 「好きだ」の意味なら三単現の s がつくはず。 今回，those でなく，that で正しいなら， That lemurs can learn socially like their distant primate relatives の後にまだ続きがあるはずです。 「キツネザルが，その遠い霊長目の親類（チンパンジーなどのことでしょう）のように，社会的に学ぶことができる，ということは...」 と主語になっている。

いつも大変お世話になっております。 Ｓ＋Ｖ＋to 動詞, to 動詞, and to 動詞 の法則？？に関して質問させていただきます。 I believe that the three most common reasons are to prepare for a career, to have new experiences, and to increase their knowledge of themselves and of the world around them. という英文があります。この形はわかりやすいのですが、以下のように、toが最初にしかついていない形を時々見かけている気がします。 They can learn to live on their own and take care of themselves without having their family always nearby. They can learn to live on their own AND They take care of themselves ではなく、 They can learn to live on their own AND They can learn to take care of themselves なのですよね？なぜ、toが省略されうるのでしょうか？ 10年以上この疑問を放置してきたのですが、今日こそ、何か意味があるのかはっきりさせていただきたいと思い、質問させていただきました。

I live in an apartment building and my elderly neighbor next door has a clock that plays music every 15 minutes and chimes on the hour (12 chimes for 12:00, etc.). I’m a graduate student in a really intense program, and the noise is maddening. I don’t like confrontation, and I tried tolerating it for a few months (studying in the library, etc.), but I learn best at home and hate feeling like I’m being chased out of it. I’ve complained to management, and while he’s lowered the volume, I can still hear it.
