質問です 下記文で・・・・ Because of the fire in the building, there were ???? 50 injured people taken to the neighboring hospital. とありました。 選択肢は A) estimation B)estimated C)an estimated D)estimating とありますが わたしは、選択肢をB)estimated と選んだのですが。。。 正解は C)だったのでがっかりしました。 なぜ C)が正解なのでしょうか？ wereがあるので anがあるのはおかしい？？と思うのですが どなたか、解りやすい解説をお願いします。

people とは特に関係ありません。 a lot of students たくさんだから複数だけど a lot この a は a(n) 形容詞＋数詞＋形容詞＋複数という表現です。 a difficult ten years で「つらい10年」 ten years でひとかたまりにして，それに a ＋形容詞がつきます。 この形容詞の部分が estimated になると，「つらい」などの代わりに「およそ」の意味が出ます。 an estimated ＋数詞＋複数で「約...個（人）の」 これは複数をひとかたまりとして a をつけておきながら，複数扱いになります。 それは動詞の直前に複数形があることにより，それに引かれているのであって，理屈では説明しようがありません。 more than one 単数が意味的には「1つより多い」であっても，単数扱いになるのと同じです。 いや，一応理屈としては an estimated number of 数詞 ＋複数形 と補って，a number of 複数「たくさんの，いくつかの」が複数扱いと同じ。 ジーニアス英和辞典に An estimated five hundred people have ... という例文が載っています。

確かに 「人々」 という意味で people が用いられているので、この people は複数なのですが、「人々」 という意味で用いられる場合には一般に peoples という複数名詞の形を取らないようです。 There are a lot of people. のようになります。 an estimated people で、ひとつの people の塊、１つにまとめた単位としてとらえているのだと思います。ここでは 「50人の負傷者」 というひとつのまとまりとしてとらえているので、an estimated people とされているのではないでしょうか。 people という語は、なかなか面倒な単語だと思います （だからわざと問題に出したりもするのかもしれませんけど）。
