embarrassed not to の後に、kill and die を補って考えてください。 前に既に述べているから、こうやって省略出来るんです。要は、省略があれば前に相当する語句がないかな？と探すのがコツです。 全体は I would kill and maybe die - because I was embarrassed not to (kill and die) 私は（誰かを）殺し、（自らも）死ぬことになるであろう - 何故なら、そうしない（not to kill and die）ことは恥ずべきことであったから みたいな意味でしょう。

志願したのか徴兵されたのかはこの部分だけからは分りませんが、とにかく兵士として戦場に赴かねばならないのだ、ということは確かなようです。 戦場では敵を殺さなければならないのだし、逆に自分が殺されるかもしれない。それでも戦場に赴かないのは、男らしくないことだ、と話者は考えているのでしょう。 それが I was embarrassed not to. という部分で表現されています。 I was embarrassed not to. で文が途切れていますが、この後に「戦場に赴く」とか「志願する」とか、「徴兵に応じる」とか、そういう意味の語が省略されていると見ることが出来ます。
