参考書の英文と訳文です。二つある内の二番目の英文で、二つのthatのそれぞれの正確な品詞とそれぞれのthatがどのように掛かっているのかを教えて下さい。 From the way her mother laughed, Mary know that she was very near being hysterical. Mary knew by her mother laughing that way that she was very near being hysterical. マリーは母のその笑い声の立て方で、これはヒステリーを起こす直前だなとわかった。

> Mary knew by her mother laughing that way that she was very near being hysterical. that way の that は、way という名詞を修飾しているので、もちろん「形容詞」です。 後ろの that の品詞は、関係代名詞かとも思いましたが、接続詞ではないかと思います（辞書でご確認を）。 このままだと、なかなかむつかしそうな文なので、一部を括弧に入れてみます。 Mary knew (by her mother laughing that way) that she was very near being hysterical. こうして、括弧の中を無視して、直訳すると、「メアリーは、彼女がヒステリー（である状態）に、とても近いということを知った」とでもなるのではないでしょうか（ここの「彼女」は her mother のことです）。 そうして、改めて括弧に括った部分だけを見ると、by her mother 「彼女の母親によって」、次の laughing の前に who was が省略されているとみれば、by her mother who was laughing that way で、「そのように笑っている彼女の母親によって」知った、という文になります。 これらを日本語として自然な表現に書き直すと、たとえば質問者さまが引用しておられるような（見事な）訳文になるわけです。

2つ目の文だけが問題なら 1つ目は不要なのではないかと思いつつ Mary knew (by her mother laughing that way) that she was.... かな. これで後ろの that はわかるはず. 前の that は way にかかるんでしょう.

None of her friends can tell how it was that she managed to get into the locked room という英文があるんですが、部分的に訳して見ると 「彼女の友達で～言えた人はいなかった」 「彼女はなんとか鍵のかかった部屋に入ることができた」 みたいになると思うんですが it was that がよくわかりません。なんとなく強調構文かなーなんて思うんですが、そうだとしたら何が強調されているのかわかりません。 電子辞書じゃどうしようもありません。よろしくお願いします。
