- treateに冷遇するという意味があるのですか？
treateを調べていたら http://www.manythings.org/ejs/treated.html のページに辿り着き、その中に次のような英語がありました。 It's a shame the way old people are treated. ところがその日本語訳が 「老人を冷遇するのは残念なことだ」 となっています。 いったいどこに冷遇するという意味が含まれているのでしょうか？ もっと下を見ていくと、 He is an old man and should be treated as such. という英語もあり、それの日本語訳は、 「彼は老人なのだから、それなりに扱わなければいけない」 とか、「彼は老人なのだから、老人として扱わなければならない」 となっていて、そこには冷遇という意味はありません。

今回もよろしくお願いいたします。ＮＨＫラジオ講座に次の文があります。 You really ought to try golfing. (本当にゴルフをやったほうがいいよ） このOUGHTは動詞でしょうか。辞書には助動詞と記載されていますが、しかし動詞のような使い方をしています。動詞のない文章が存在するのか？頭をひねっています。SHOUDを使えば You should try golfing ,really. となると思いますが？幼稚な質問ですが、よろしくお願いいたします。

- 本来の意味での接続法が would, might, ought で使えないことの不思議
had や should が trgovec さんの指摘するように接続詞のかわりになる、そういう使い方ができるのに、would, might, may, ought に関してはそういう使い方ができないのは不思議ではありませんか？どうしてなのでしょうか？ Had I taken the course,,,,,, Should he be busy,....

次の英文の文法的な部分で行き詰まっています。 Trying to make a male buyer feel that his masculinity is at issue when he is considering buying something , and that he will be less manly in some way should he not make the purchase is often employed. 訳：「男性が購入を考えているときは自分の男らしさが問われているのであり、万が一その買い物をしなければ、その男性はその分だけ男性的でなくなると買い手に感じさせるという手法がよく用いられる」 ここで分からないのが次の２点です。 ・in some way の意味 ・should の 意味 特にshould he not make ...の部分のshouldの扱いがわからず困っています。 この文は if he should not make the purchase のshouldが倒置された形かと思うのですが、その場合なぜif he had not make ではなく should が使われるのかが理解できません。 よろしくお願いいたします。
