こんばんは。 前後の文脈からの情報で変わると思いますし、あまり正確な訳とは言えないかもしれませんが、直訳と意訳を載せておきます。 (1)橋は、小川を横切る一本の丸太や、川を横切る綱でもありうる。（小川に渡す丸太でも、川に渡す綱でも橋と言える） (2)それぞれ橋の端にある、２つの巨大な塔に支えられている鋼のケーブルから吊り下がっている。（橋の端部にあるそれぞれの塔（＝主塔）から、鋼のケーブルで吊られている） (3)吊っている間隔は、１９３７年に完成した時、世界一の長さだった。（１９３７年に橋が完成したとき、スパン長（＝主塔と主塔の間隔）は世界一だった） 吊り橋の話のようですね。間違っているかもしれないので、参考程度にどうぞ。

橋は小川にかかる丸太のこともあれば、（もっと大きい）川にかかるロープのこともある。 それは橋の両端に一本ずつある二本の巨大な塔に支えられた鋼のケーブルにぶら下がる。 （吊り橋の事かな？） 完成した1937年当時は世界一スパン長の長い吊り橋だった。 （ゴールデンゲートブリッジのことかな？）
