過去の事実以外のことを仮定して、もしそうなら、--だっただろうと言う 表現なので、典型的な仮定法過去完了のような気がしますけど。

I still believe I would have gained something in the struggle, because in what time I had left, I would have been a more complete, compassionate and intelligent man, and therefore more alive. の部分を私なりに訳してみました。 「もし癌に負けてしまったら。もし再発して再び癌が戻って来たらどうしよう。仮にそうなっても、癌との戦いに何か得るものがあるはずだ。だって、残された日々、より高い、人の気持ちのわかる、聡明な人間になって、今以上に生きるんだから。」 私には「過去の事実以外のことを仮定して、もしそうなら、--だっただろうと言う...典型的な仮定法過去完了のような気がし」ないのですが。
