何と訳せばいいの？

Through his experience, I realized that it is only putting ourselves in other people's shoes that we can actually be of help to them 上記の文章をどうやって訳せばいいのか教えてください。

　「it is ... that ～.」の強調構文が用いられているようですので、「～するのは・・・だ。」と訳しますが、「only」の後に「by」があった方がつながりが良いのではないかと思います。 　すなわち、「...」の部分に「only by ...ing」という形があれば「～できるのは・・・すること【によって】のみだ。」という意味になります。 　意訳をすれば「・・・すること【によって】のみ・・・できる。」となります。さらに「only」の限定的な意味合いをくみ取って思いきって「・・・しなければ～できない。」と訳すこともできます。 　また、「his experience」と「I realized」の関係がよく分かりません。「my experience」であればつながりが良いのですが、何か特別な状況だと考えれば「his experience」でも訳をつけることはできます。 　なお、「put oneself in other people's shoes」は「他人の身になって考える」と訳しましょう。 　全訳は、「彼の経験を通して私が悟ったことは、私たちが本当に他人の役に立つことができるのは他人の身になって考えることによってのみだるということです。」となります。 　または、「彼の経験を通して私が悟ったことは、他人の身になって考えなければ私たちは本当に他人の役に立つことはできないのだということです。」でも良いでしょう。 　ご参考になれば・・・。

http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/put+in+another+person%27s+shoes にあるんですけど、「人の靴を履く」＝「その人と同じ状況になる」＝「その人の代わりになる」というような意味があります。 「私は、彼の経験を通じて、自分が相手の身になって初めて他人の助けになると思った。」 という翻訳になりそうですね。 英語は英語で読むといいですよぉ。

Through his experience, I realized that it is only putting ourselves in other people's shoes that we can actually be of help to them. 彼の経験 (を聞いてみて)から、本当に他人のお役に立とうとするのは、何かしら(まるで)他人の(自分を殺しても、or自分には合わないサイズの)靴に自分の足を入れてみることなのだなーと判った(という意味だと知ったのだった)。 (括弧内)は意訳部分です。
