直接的な質問で恐縮ですが、和訳していただけないでしょうか? 自分でも調べてみたのですが、いまいち意味がつかめません。 4のほうは「気をつけろ。距離をとれ」のようなニュアンス だと思いますが、あっているでしょうか?教えてください。 宜しくお願いします。 4. Watch at distance 5. Even if he had known the rule, the idea of bowing to the madness of a cane cutter would have been as ridiculous as paying his workers’ salaries during the six months that sugar was off-season, or not screwing their daughters.

- would rather の正体とは?
とても基本的な質問なんです。『 would rather / would sooner はいったい何? 助動詞の役割も持つ動詞代用品? そのものに過去形も存在しない?』 というのが質問です。 would rather は 助動詞+副詞 です。 というのは みますし、 例文も would rather +不定動詞 ~ やら would rather that 文~ などの使用例も勉強したのですが・・・ A Practical English Grammar にも prefer と 同じだ! その他の参考書にもwant / like の働きをする。などと あります。 A Practical English Grammar では、 ~would rather+infinitive cannot express preferences in the past, so the past equivalent of{Tom would rather read than talk} would be{ Tom preferred reading to talking/liked reading better than talking.} とありまして、こちらは「反対の事実を表さなければ そのままで過去形も表せる」 ととってよかったでしょうか? すみません、よろしくおねがいいたします。

- 訳してもらえますでしょうか?
誰か訳してください… "I take the liberty of inferring your writing proficiency from what you write here (which is more difficult than expected) and offering shorter and easier-to-read sentences to you. Please go easy on me," he says, but no sooner had I seen his one or two sentences than I found his lack of proficiency in writing, and because of terms used and grammatical errors, I would say that his lines are marginal at best. Only if he is intentionally setting a poor example of a sentence Japanese learners tend to write can I go easy on him.

Mr. Edwards, the winner of the South Carolina primary in 2004, also slashed into his leading rival in the state, Mr. Obama, by portraying him as weak-willed for voting “present” -- rather than yea or nay -- on scores of bills as an Illinois state senator. このpresentとon scores of billsが何を指しているのかが分かりません。 どうぞよろしくおねがいします。

Mayron held that O’Leary et al. (1978), in using a classroom of diagnosed hyperactive children, had tested a different hypothesis than his group had done in studying a regular, rather than a special-education, classroom. という文で、最後のrather thanは「特殊教育の教室よりむしろ通常の クラスで」ということかとわかるのですが、最初のthan (had tested a different hypothesis thanのthan)の訳し方が わかりません。単に「彼らのグループとは異なる仮説で」などと 「とは」といった感じで軽く訳せば良いのでしょうか? 「~より」という比較の意味はなくても良いのでしょうか。 よろしくお願いします。

翻訳お願いいたします。 some time later, when the new marriage had settled into a routine, people wondered if the piano tuner would begin to think about retiring. With a bad knee, and being sightless in old age, he would readily have been forgiven in the house and the convents and the school halls where he applied his skill. Leisure was his due, the good fortune of company as his years sipped by no more than he deserved. But when, occasionally, this was put to him by the loquacious or the inquisitive he denide that anything of the kind was in his thoughts, that he considered only the visitation of depth as bringing any kind of end. The truth was, he would be lost without his work, without his travelling about, his arrival every six months or so in one of the small towns to which he had offered his services for so long. No, no, he promised, they'd still see the white Vauxhall turning in at a farm gate or parked for harf an hour in a convent play-yard, or drawn up on a verge while he ate his lunch time sandwhiches, his tea poured out of a Thermos by his wife.
