解釈について
いつも有難うございますｍ(＿＿)ｍ ちょっと疑問に思ったことがあるのですが、 どなたか、教えてください(>_<。)HelpMe!! 「 Let me assure you, you gentlemen who sit comfortably in your armchairs and attribute no worthy motives to us climbers, that there is something more than self-satisfaction in placing our feet upon a summit where no foot has ever trod before. 」 との例文がありまして、 その訳が、 「 みなさん、みなさんはひじかけ椅子に気持ちよく座っておられて、 私たち登山家が貴重な動機を持っているなどとは思ってもみられませんが、前人未踏の山頂に足跡を印すことには自己満足以上の何かがあることを、私ははっきりと申し上げます。 」 と書いてありますが、 私は、「in placing以下」を「self-satisfaction」にかけて、 「前人未踏の山頂に足跡を印すという自己満足以上の何かがある」と 考えたのが、これではどうしてダメなのでしょうか？ 解説のような解釈にするには、文脈に頼るしかないのでしょうか？ どなたか教えてください(>_<。)HelpMe!!

私の第一印象は両者ともあまり差はない、ということでした。 読み返すと、たしかに「解説の」訳の方が原文に近いです。 ご質問は「文脈」か、ということですが、この五行、しかも問題に直接関係のあるのは僅か終わりの三行で、それで判断が出来る訳ですから、「文脈］ではないと思います。 要するに骨だけにすれば there is X in Y 「Y に X がある」という話ですから、その Y が X にかかると解釈すると「(Y の X） がある」ということになって、文の各部分の関係が見え難くなってしまうのが誤訳の原因かと思います。 どうもうまく表現できず済みません。

自己満足をいましめる文章として、次のような文章があります。 Self-satisfaction. There is but little remedy for this affliction, and no hope for those who suffer from it. あるアメリカの書籍なのですが、日本語版では 「自己満足。この病気は治しようがない。 この病気にかかっている人には、 明日への希望はない。」 となっています。 もしこの文章からbutが無くて There is little remedy for this affliction だったら、「この病気を治す方法はちょっとある」 みたいな意味になりますよね？ butが入ることによって「この病気は治しようがない」 ってなるのは、butにどのような効果があるのでしょうか。 私は、「but」という単語について 中学校で習った「でも」という意味しか知りません。 アドバイスよろしくお願い致します。
